Oracle DBA – Networks and Operations
Job Summary
This position is primarily responsible for supporting the University’s PeopleSoft enterprise Oracle databases. It requires an in-depth understanding of Oracle database administration and CWU’s computing infrastructure. It is responsible for the database environments, database security, database patches, upgrades and database access tools, and database process automation. It manages the day-to-day operation of the Oracle databases by ensuring that they are running optimally in a secure and reliable environment. This position participates in departmental planning and is part of a team that is responsible for both long term planning and day-to-day operation of the University’s database systems.
As a secondary function this position will also provide some Linux server support in the area of System Administration.
Job Duties
Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the University’s computing databases by ensuring they are properly configured for optimal performance, processing, and have adequate room for future growth. Monitor database health and performance using monitoring tools like Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control. Perform database administration tasks such as:
- Instance tuning,
- Monitoring database objects to allow for future growth and ensuring they are optimally configured,
- Identifying poor performing SQL,
- Monitoring user access to database and support database access requests,
- Trouble-shooting database problems,
- Consulting with and advising ITS and other University personnel on database administration related issues, assisting with SQL tuning, running scripts, and object design,
- Database refreshes,
- Monitoring server disk and memory usage to ensure there are adequate resources to support database environment.
- Monitoring database refreshes of the University’s reporting databases and trouble-shoot refresh problems as necessary.
- Documentation of work and procedure.
- Responsible for database software installations, configuration and upgrading the database environments and tools used in administrative computing systems. Ensure databases are running on a supported database version and are kept current by applying database patch-sets, one-off patches, security patches, upgrading to a major database release, implementing new database features and performance monitoring tools as needed. Frequently monitor the database vendor’s support site to stay current on the latest database release, patch-set, and security issues.
- Design, create, and install databases as part of new application installations. Where possible, when new administrative computing applications are implemented on campus, the data for the applications should be integrated into the existing university data, both logically and physically. Review new technology and make recommendations on products that may improve support or performance of the University’s mission-critical databases. Contribute to the planning and operation of the ITS Applications division. In consultation with the PS and DB Admin Supervisor and the DBA Team, develop and administer appropriate data administration policies and standards.
- Other duties as assigned in particular systems administration of select Linux server environments.
Minimum Qualifications
- Oracle DBA experience including database tuning, backup & recovery, database maintenance, installation of database software and patches in support of enterprise database systems such as Financials, Human Resources, Portal or Student Records.
- Solid understanding of fundamental database concepts.
- Strong desire and aptitude to learn new technologies and additional Oracle solutions.
- Solid Unix system fundamentals.
- Ability to create SQL & Bash scripts for automation of tasks.
- Ability to work effectively with DBAs, Developers, System Administrators, Network Administrators, and customers to resolve problems with application/database systems.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to work independently and on team projects. Thorough understanding of database systems gained through at least 5 years’ experience working with Oracle database systems.
- Minimum year experience administration of Unix\Linux servers.
- Bachelor’s degree including 27 semester or 45 quarter hours of computer science, engineering, or math courses or sufficient certification or work experience demonstrating equivalent experience.
- OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with ERP systems such as PeopleSoft, Banner, or Workday with an understanding of the ERP Architecture, Upgrades, and Application Updates.
- Completion of the Oracle Database Administration training path and/or Oracle Certification.
- Experience working with ERP or database systems hosted in cloud environments.
- Minimum of one year programming experience in a major scripting language in the area of process automation.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary: $5,574/month with periodic increases up to $7,316/month
Schedule/Appointment: Monday - Friday, 7:00am-4:00pm (1 hour lunch), some evening and weekend work
Working Conditions: Work is performed in an indoor office setting with frequent in-person interactions. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer work station for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks and create/maintain filing systems for departmental records. Some evening or weekend work and/or occasional travel may be required.
