Summary
By assisting City of Kirkland management and staff in finding innovative ways to improve performance of their duties, the Intern learns about the functions and activities of a highly regarded municipal government.
** Note: Up to 5 Intern positions are available. Dependent upon needs, an Intern may be assigned to a specific department within the City.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
The Intern may be assigned a variety of tasks and assignments such as:
- Assist with research projects
- Perform policy analysis
- Collect data, write summary reports, present findings
- Assist with community outreach efforts
- Assist with the design and distribution of outreach materials
- Attend public meetings, assist with meeting set-up and dismantling
- Provide general support to City staff, assist with special tasks
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Experience with report writing, research methods, and data compilation.
- Ability to independently organize and prioritize workload.
- Ability to work effectively and productively in a group setting.
- Familiarity with standard computer software for word processing and spreadsheet applications (e.g., Microsoft suite: Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Familiarity with public involvement programs and techniques is desirable.
- Relevant work or volunteer experience preferred.
Working toward a bachelor's or master's degree in business, marketing, public administration, communications, urban planning, or other related field. A valid driver's license is required.
Note: Applicants who previously graduated with an undergraduate or master's degree on or after July 1, 2018 are eligible to apply for the Intern position.
Hours of WorkTo be mutually agreed upon at time of job offer. Anticipated length of internship is 3-6 months from start date. Work days/hours are flexible, but it is desired that the Intern work up to full time during the summer, with flexibility for a different schedule during the academic year.
Salary NoteThe salary step amount offered will be dependent upon university enrollment level. Undergrad Intern steps are $14.65 - $15.92 per hour depending upon relevant experience, and Graduate Intern steps are $17.17 - $18.95 per hour depending upon relevant experience. Previous college graduates are also paid within these salary ranges.
Working Conditions & Physical ActivitiesWork will primarily be performed at Kirkland City Hall. Job involves office/computer work and sitting for long periods of time. Some field work/site visits around the City of Kirkland and occasional attendance at evening meetings may be required.
