Corrections Officer - City of Kirkland ( Job # 18-0011)

Minimum Salary: $4,675.00 per month
Maximum Salary: $5,836.00 per month

Summary

Provides support services in the areas of prisoner transport, prisoner care and custody, the taking of crime reports, calls for assistance of a non-criminal nature, and other related activities. Receives into custody persons arrested, completes arrest reports, fingerprints and photographs the subject, maintains custody in the jail facility. Facilitates alternative sentencing programs and handles coordination of court appearances and schedules. Provides care and custody for people housed in the Kirkland jail and may serve as a backup for an evidence officer.

Note:  Starting monthly salary is dependent upon relevant experience for this position.   The City of Kirkland also offers an education and fitness incentive to those employees who qualify.

 

Hours of Work

Must be available to work rotating shifts.   Corrections staff currently work a combination of 8 and 12 hour shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be 21 years of age or older and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must have a valid Washington State Driver's License, at time of hire and the ability to remain insurable under the City's insurance plan. Must not possess any physical or visual impairment that would prevent the employee from maintaining physical custody of others. Must possess sufficient health and physical capability to participate in defensive tactics training and other required physical activities.

Preferred Qualifications

Related criminal justice experience and/or education are preferred. Basic computer skills are also preferred.

Working Conditions & Physical Activities

Work is performed in jail, court, community, and police department settings as well as driving motor vehicles. The employee is armed and holds a special commission to serve warrants. A Corrections Officer is required to wear a uniform in the performance of all duties.

Selection Process

The Kirkland Police Department uses Public Safety Testing to conduct the application process and a written and physical exam. Applicants who pass the physical exam and receive a minimum 70% score on the written exam are placed on an interview list according to the written score results. As openings occur,  interviews for this position are conducted from this list.

In order to be considered for employment, candidate(s) must successfully complete a background investigation which will include a computerized voice stress analyzer exam, psychological evaluation, and evaluation of physical capability. Upon hire, as a condition of continued employment, candidate must successfully complete the State Certified Corrections Academy and the Kirkland Police Department Field Training Program.
