Summary
The City Manager's Office (CMO) Graduate Intern will assist the Regional Business Partnership Manager in regional eastside economic development efforts. The Intern will learn about local government, the functions and activities of the CMO, and the economic development activities of the greater Eastside region. The Intern will provide research and writing assignements related to regional start-up businesses and entrepreneur education programs. The Intern will assist with a variety of short-term and longer range economic development tasks and activities.
Essential Responsibilities
- Assists staff with drafting a 3-5 year strategic plan for Startup 425, an alliance of the cities of Kirkland, Renton, Issaquah, Bellevue and Redmond. This five city alliance assists entreprenuers, and early-stage businesses and is managed by the City of Kirkland.
- Provides administrative support for the Startup 425 Advisory Committee.
- Conducts research, data collection, and report writing.
- Prepares memos, reports and graphics to illustrate and inform economic development strategic plans/proposals.
- Attends Startup 425 Advisory Committee meetings, takes minutes of meetings.
- Provides general support to staff, including assistance with meeting set-up and dismantling.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Familiarity with basic principles of economic development/growth stage businesses.
- Interest in assisting small and disadvantaged businesses.
- Ability to independently organize and prioritize workload.
- Knowledge and ability to perform research, report writing, organization/presentation of reports.
- Ability to work effectively in a small group setting.
- Familiarity with standard computer software for report writing processing. (e.g., Microsoft suite: Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Ability to prepare graphics illustrating economic data and concepts with computer software.
Working toward a master's degree in business administration, economic development, or a closely-related field. Must have advanced research and writing skills. A valid driver's license is required.
Hours of WorkTo be mutually agreed upon at time of job offer. Work days/hours are flexible, but it is desired that the CMO Graduate Intern work approximately 6 - 10 hours per week during the academic year. During the summer months, there will be the possibility of working more than 15 hours/week, but not more than 20 hours/week.
Working Conditions & Physical ActivitiesJob primarily involves desk work. Research / writing assignments are done at City Hall workstation. Will attend periodic off-site meetings.
