Summary
The Historic Preservation Intern will assist the Planning & Building Department staff in the performance of their duties, learn about the planning profession and activities of a planning department, and provide fresh insight on rules, procedures, and planning/design best practices. They will assist with a variety of long-range and current planning tasks. Specifically, the Planning Intern for Historic Preservation will assist staff with a project to digitize historic records, integrate historic property information with the City's GIS browser, and create content for the City's Historic Preservation webpage.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists Planning staff with short- and long-term planning projects.
- Conducts writing, research, data collection, and data entry tasks.
- Prepares maps and other graphics to illustrate and inform Planning proposals, and assist in public outreach.
- Updates Planning and Building Department website and creates web content to foster public input.
- Works outside of office: posts notices, takes photos, and undertakes miscellaneous errands.
- Provides general support to staff, including assistance with meeting set-up and dismantling.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Familiarity with basic principles of design and urban planning.
- Ability to independently organize and prioritize workload.
- Ability to work effectively and productively in a group setting.
- Familiarity with standard computer software for word processing and database operations (e.g., Microsoft suite: Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Familiarity with webpage editing and/or ability to learn new software for this and other tasks.
- Ability to prepare graphics illustrating spatial, planning, and/or design concepts – manually and/or with computer software.
- Design, website, and/or historic architecture experience/knowledge is highly desirable.
Working toward a bachelor's or master's degree in urban planning, architecture, geography, landscape architecture, or a closely-related field. A driver's license is required.
Hours of WorkTo be mutually agreed upon at time of job offer. Work days/hours are flexible, but it is desired that the Planning Intern work approximately 10-15 hours per week during the academic year. During the summer months, there may be the possibility of working more than 15 hours/week, but not more than 20 hours/week.
Salary NoteThe salary step amount offered will be dependent upon university enrollment level. Undergrad Intern steps are $14.65 or $15.92 per hour depending upon relevant experience, and Graduate Intern steps are $17.17 or $18.95 per hour depending upon relevant experience.
Working Conditions & Physical ActivitiesJob involves desk work which may be interrupted with phone calls, errands, and meetings. Data entry is done at the computer terminal. Graphics may be prepared at the light table, drafting table, or computer terminal.
