Job Description
The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing and coordinating activities within the shop and in supporting of multiple projects spread across Western Washington. They will also effectively monitor schedule and budget for material needs for projects, and effectively communicate both verbally and through written electronic mediums. The position normally manages up to 4 shop personnel, and coordinates with multiple site foreman. There is the potential for flexibility in the daily work schedule.
The Shop Manager will report to the Company’s Director of Operations and have the following
responsibilities:
- Be responsible for the shop including personnel, inventory, deliveries, and jobs that pass through the shop
- Maintain a neat, clean, and orderly shop
- Meet established deadlines and objectives of jobs
- Assign personnel to appropriate tasks and ensure completion
- Communicate with Director of Operations and Project Superintendent(s) when there is an issue with material or tools that will impact the schedule
- Maintain appropriate, accurate, and organized inventory levels
- Maintain adequate levels of inventory by working with purchasing manager to order items when stock runs low
- Organize inventory on shelves to be neat and easy to find
- Support and maintain the inventory control system (future system)
- Receive, document, and communicate inbound shipments of materials and tools
- Receive, unload, unpack and visually inspect all incoming shipments of supplies, tools, etc.
- Report to purchasing manager all broken or defective products
- Communicate if received materials is unviable and will impact schedules to scheduling team
- Ensure accurate staging of materials and pick-up or delivery to job sites
- Ensure that picked materials match requirements for each job
- Coordinate pickup or delivery of staged materials each day documenting status (delivery or pick up)
- Arrange deliveries of tools, parts, and materials to job sites if needed
- Ensure staged materials are released each day
- Fill out and track all listings (both scheduled from design and the field, and unscheduled inventory taken by the field) to be provided to the Purchasing Manager at least weekly
- Close out open jobs
- Maintain tools and equipment
- Repair damaged or broken equipment/tools, whenever possible
- Ensure tools, toolboxes and equipment return from the Job Site.
- Monitor utilization and proposeful purchases
- Increase quality and/or efficiency of product coming out of the shop
- Schedule and fabricate product as required
- Work with Director of Operations and Project Superintendent(s) to receive work orders for fabrication
- Prepare estimate for fabrication timeline and report details to Director of Operations and Project Superintendent(s)
- Manage shop employees to fabricate products, and assist with fabrication when needed
- Final QA/QC on fabricated product
- Move to staging for delivery or pick-up
- Manage shop personnel
- Manage shop employees, including hiring, mentoring, scheduling, training/development, as well as offering promotion, discipline and termination
- Schedule work to be performed and assign jobs to shop employees
- Supervise and train all shop employees and ensure their performance meets company standards
Qualifications (must have):
- Experience working in a warehouse/shop environment with fabrication and inventory
- Ability to manage multiple project needs simultaneously (between 15-20);
- Experience managing direct reports
- Excellent communication skills, and works well with others
- Excellent organizational skills to be able to stay on top of multiple project site needs, requests, and normal shop duties
- Experience, prior training and experience operating a forklift
- Experience pulling a utility trailer behind a truck
- A valid driver’s license
- Experience with electronic software and mediums;
- Interest in helping build a consistent process within Columbia Fire
Qualifications (like to have):
- Experience in the wet/fire sprinkler industry;
- Experience with union trades;
- Experience with fabrication, including but not limited to welding
