Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Chairperson, the Director of Laboratories is responsible for the operation, maintenance and proper utilization of teaching and research facilities, instructional classrooms, faculty and staff offices in the Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering program.
Essential Functions:
- The incumbent provides a full array of services related to the laboratories and facilities. By way of illustration and not limitation, this function.
- Oversees daily departmental facility’s needs. Acts as liaison person to: Facilities, for facilities needs such as Custodial, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, locksmith, etc.
- Telecommunications for departmental phone and data networking needs; Security and outside vendors.
- Designs, coordinates and manages construction of new laboratories, faculty and staff offices, and common areas.
- Researches, selects, designs and purchases new equipment and supplies in conjunction with experiments, coordinates user needs for equipment and staff in collaboration with department chair and ME Laboratory and facilities Committee.
- Advises the Chair of required revisions for written documentation i.e. manuals and procedures, modifies computer/mechanical laboratory equipment to support the curricula.
- Develops, executes and documents laboratory experiments. Writes experiment protocols. Incorporates computer utilization into experiments, laboratory upgrades and computer interfacing into the MIE academic programs.
- Makes requests for equipment upgrades or purchases when necessary. Maintains inventory for supplies and materials necessary in the operation of the laboratory facilities.
- Keeps abreast of changes in technology and developments.
- Utilizes the university’s financial and purchasing systems to initiate and approve requisitions for departmental needs.
- Acts as resource person and researches equipment marketplace/vendors and provides technical information when requested.
- Coordinates the scheduling of labs for all functions including course instruction, repairs and maintenance, demonstrations, experimentation for academic year and summer events as required by the other offices/departments on campus.
- Performs electronic and mechanical repairs on laboratory and research equipment.
- Supervises & conducts undergraduate laboratory experimental instruction in classroom.
- Monitors and reports on the performance of the technical staff. Assigns duties and establishes work priorities. Maintains attendance records of the technical staff.
- Provides technical support for special events e.g. Career Day, Dean's Day, fall and winter open houses that are scheduled on weekends and/or evenings.
- Instructs/trains Graduate Assistants and faculty each semester in the operation of lab experiments.
- Oversees departmental construction projects as requested. Acts as liaison person to: Facilities, Planning and Special Projects, Telecommunications and outside services,
- Prepares schematics and develops plan for implementation of departmental project.
- Supervises installation of new laboratory and research equipment; develops shop drawings, schematics and sketches, as required.
- Evaluates donated equipment from external sources for its functionality and usefulness.
- Serves as Departmental Safety Officer (DSO) Monitors safety procedures in the laboratories, including safety procedures for research and laboratory experiments in progress, serves on NJIT committee on Safety.

Performs other duties as assigned.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering is required, preferably in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of three to five years' industrial experience is required. Must have demonstrated ability in laboratory creation and development; must have demonstrated ability with CAD/CAM/CNC systems.
- Must have a demonstrated supervisory ability and initiative; must be able to work independently.
- At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
