HSJC is more than a shelter, we are a community resource center. We are meeting the increasing need for pet owner support services, so that families do not have to choose between an excessive cost and a beloved family member.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates Degree required, or equivalent education or experience
- 2 Years management experience required or equivalent education or experience.
- Experience with Microsoft Office required
- Possess a valid Driver’s License, a clean driving record.
- Animal sheltering experience and/or experience working with medical and behavioral needs of companion animals is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated supervisory knowledge, including motivational techniques, conflict resolution, and professional development/training methods.
Salary
- $50-65K a year based on qualifications
JOB TITLE: Shelter Director

STATUS: Salaried; Exempt.
SUMMARY:
The Shelter Director is responsible for the overall management and leadership of shelter operations, promoting the shelter’s mission and ensuring the humane care of the animals at the shelter. The director reports to the Board and provides supervision of employees, program administration, volunteer coordination, facility management, fundraising direction, financial management and community outreach and education. Due to a small staff, the Shelter Director may also need to step in and perform any of the duties performed by the Animal Caregiving staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Animal Shelter Management
- Ensure the welfare of all shelter animals, including proper intake procedures, necessary veterinary care, compliance with animal welfare regulations and appropriate adoptions.
- Oversee maintenance of buildings and grounds and ordering of all shelter supplies and equipment.
- Ensure safe interaction between public and shelter animals.
Staff/Volunteer Management
- Hire, train, mentor, and schedule employees to ensure operational needs of the shelter are met.
- Foster a team environment by working collaboratively and professionally with co-workers, volunteers, board, and the public to accomplish organizational goals and objectives.
- Plan and coordinate regular training programs to ensure that staff and volunteers have necessary skills and abilities to accomplish required tasks.
- Supervise the performance of staff at the shelter, develop/update job descriptions, conduct annual staff reviews/evaluations and manage any performance issues
Financial Management
- Work with Treasurer to develop and manage annual budget.
- Coordinate grant planning, application, and reporting process.
- Work with the Treasurer or Bookkeeper to manage accounting, payroll, and cash management systems.
Communication & Public Relations
- Collaborate with other shelters and rescue groups to facilitate adoptions.
- Supervise the shelter’s public relations and social media activities, including the website, Facebook, print media and the newsletter.
- Manage and negotiate contracts with Jefferson County and the City of Port Townsend.
Fundraising, Development and Donor Relations
- Work with Board to coordinate fundraising events, capital campaigns, grants and bequests.
- Assist the board in cultivating potential donors and maintaining contact with existing donors.
Board Relations
- Coordinate and communicate with Board and its committees to implement programs and services that accomplish the shelter’s mission.
- Attend Board meetings and provide monthly Director’s reports.
- Other duties as may be assigned by the Board of Directors
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Compassion and empathy for animals and human clients.
- Skilled handling of all companion animals, including but not limited to dogs and cats.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Environment: Indoor and outdoor environment; exposure to noises, vibrations, odors, dust, chemicals and noxious fumes; work in inclement weather including rain, heat, sun, snow and cold. Employee may be exposed to animal feces and animals with a potential for zoonotic exposure.
- Physical: Requires sufficient mobility for walking, standing, sitting, bending or kneeling for prolonged periods of time; ability to routinely transport materials, supplies, and animals weighing up to 49 pounds.
