The rank of Sergeant with King County Sheriff's Office is a commissioned position, classified as a first line supervisor of Deputies and civilian employees. Responsibilities include coordination, scheduling and administrative support of shift, section or unit activities; resource management; and response to field situations as an incident commander. Sergeants may also be assigned to serve in a leadership position within a contract city.
This is a Civil Service closed-promotional opportunity and is open only to current King County Sheriff's Office Deputies. This recruitment will establish an eligibility list for the rank of Sergeant through a competitive promotional examination process, in accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreements and King County Civil Service Rules.
Current KCSO Deputies must have the following years' experience:
Entry Deputy - Must have completed four (4) years as a King County Deputy Sheriff by July 25, 2025.
Lateral Deputy - Must have completed three (3) years as a King County Deputy Sheriff by July 25, 2025.

WORK SCHEDULE: Typical business work schedule are 40 hours per week. Additional hours and/or modified schedules may be necessary to respond to workload needs. This position is overtime eligible.

SELECTION PROCESS: The rank of Sergeant is a civil service classified position. This process will be administered in accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreements and King County Civil Service Rules.
COMMISSION REVIEW OF EXAMINATION RESULTS: In accordance with Civil Service Rule, section 8.4.1 - Commission Review of Examination Results:
"Prior to certification from a new employment list, the overall test results must be accepted by the Commission. If the Commission rejects the results, it must state publicly its reasons for so doing. Notice of this discretionary power of the Commission will be clearly stated on all recruiting announcements."
CIVIL SERVICE ELIGIBILITY LIST: Candidates who successfully pass both the required Written Examination and Assessment Center will be placed on the 2025 Sergeant Promotion eligibility list, in rank score order in accordance with all applicable provisions of the King County Civil Service Rules.

Job Duties
Duties commensurate with the KCSO Sergeant job classification include:
- Supervise assigned personnel: Plan, organize and coordinate daily work activities; prepare work schedules and staffing plans. Assign, approve, monitor, and post overtime. Reallocate resources where necessary to ensure timely completion of work.
- Ensure assigned personnel are in compliance with policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Monitor work quality for adherence to standards. Identify training needs. Evaluate the performance of individuals and teams in achieving organizational goals. Conduct formal and informal counseling sessions to correct work deficiencies and develop work skills. Assist with career development and planning.
- Provide coordination and administrative support in supervision of shift, section or unit activities; make sure that individuals and teams have the resources needed to complete the job.
- Motivate assigned personnel and encourage creative approaches to problem solving. Provide technical instruction in the proper methods, techniques, and procedures of law enforcement operations for individuals and/or teams.
- Conduct formal and informal counseling sessions with individuals in order to correct work deficiencies and develop work skills.
- Meet with Deputies to solve law enforcement problems. Review and evaluate incoming reports to identify suspects, potential problem areas, patterns, or similarities, and to assign work to others. Respond to reports of possible crime and assure that appropriate actions are taken.
- Complete supervisory documentation.
- At the scene of an emergency incident or field situation, take command and direct/request resources.
- Conduct routine briefings of management and assigned personnel, including roll call briefings; Investigate alleged incidents of personnel misconduct, public complaints, and internal complaints.
- Respond to and investigate officer-involved accidents, shootings and other use of force incidents; Complete administrative and record keeping reports.
- Recommend personnel actions (i.e., commendations and/or discipline).
- Respond to crime scenes to supervise Deputies in protection of the scene, preservation of life, property and evidence.
- Assist assigned personnel with career development and planning; identify training needs of individuals and/or teams.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

- Recognize potential problems and head them off, rather than simply respond to problems as they occur. Effectively assign work activities and/or responsibilities to individuals and teams, including assignments during emergency incidents, long-term projects, and routine activities.
- Read, interpret and apply laws, ordinances, rules and regulations; use proper investigative techniques and procedures.
- Analyze data, numbers, and problems then formulate effective solutions or responses.
- Represent KCSO in a positive manner in a variety of forums; ability and demeanor necessary to interact with others in a work environment in a tactful, productive and supportive manner.
- Maintain accurate written records and schedules of assigned personnel, resources and operations.
- Function as a liaison between assigned personnel and management.
- Evaluate the results of assigned work and responsibilities and provide constructive feedback to assigned personnel.
- Review and edit the written work of assigned personnel, making sure that appropriate corrections are made, and feedback is provided; Clearly communicate in writing, without errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation or format. Plan and set priorities, and coordinate or schedule tasks or events in a logical manner so as to maximize staff and material resources and meet goals and timelines.
- Effectively use administrative/office equipment to communicate, including computers, software, telephones, recording devices, radios, etc.
