Summary

King County Superior Court is accepting applications for a full-time Adult Guardianship Court Visitor Specialist.  This position is eligible for benefits.

The responsibilities of this classification include performing the statutory duties of an Adult Guardianship Court Visitor (CV) as described in RCW Chapter 11.130, for persons who are alleged to be in need of a guardian or conservator and indigent. The incumbent assists the Probate/Guardianship Case Manager in monitoring the appointments of all Title 11 Court Visitors and participates on behalf of the court in the mandatory Court Visitor Registry training required by law and the court’s Administrative Policy. The incumbent maintains records and statistics pertaining to job duties; and assists in the development and implementation of a plan for recouping fees and costs in cases when indigence is not confirmed by the court, or assets subsequently become available in guardianship estates. Incumbent may make presentations.

Work location:  Primary work location is at the King County Courthouse, 516 Third Avenue in Seattle, WA. The incumbent may be required to work at other court facilities.

Work schedule:  This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not overtime eligible.  The workweek is normally Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.   Variations from these hours may occur.

Job Duties

The following duties are not intended to represent the entire functional capacity of the position at the task level.

Meet with persons alleged to be in need of a guardian or conservator. Conduct interviews and make written recommendations to the court. Inform the Respondent of his/her due process rights.
 
Investigate the assets of the Respondent and ensures those assets are protected. May be required to authorize emergency medical treatment for the Respondent.

Investigate alternate arrangements on behalf of the Respondent as less restrictive alternatives to the appointment of a guardian or a limited guardian.
 
Set up and maintain case files; prepare, serve, and file required forms/notices and calendars the case.

Keep statistical records on all cases; provide statistics and information upon request.

Interview other parties who have knowledge of the Respondent’s ability to manage independently. Obtain written and/or oral reports from other qualified professionals as are necessary.
 
Meet with the proposed guardian/conservator or limited guardian/conservator to ascertain whether the proposed guardian/conservator is qualified to serve. Inform the proposed guardian/conservator of the reporting requirements and confirms statutory qualification.
 
Prepare reports on analysis and recommendations. Appear in court at hearings and may be required to defend recommendations.
 
Assist in the operation and implementation of the Court Visitor Registry. Participate in Court Visitor Registry trainings.
 
Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Bachelor of Social Work or related degree and completion of Court Visitor training program. Three years’ experience working with the needs of impaired elderly people, physical disabilities, mental illness, developmental disabilities and/or other areas relevant to the needs of incapacitated persons; three years’ experience working in a legal environment or with legal documents; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above. A juris doctorate degree is desirable.

Knowledge of statutes, Court Rules, court procedures and practices in all aspects of probate and guardianship proceedings. Working knowledge of court systems, including roles and responsibilities of court departments and related agencies, key personnel, and case flow. Knowledge of relevant community resources in the areas of probate and guardianship matters. Knowledge of and skill in team building. Knowledge of cultural diversity. Knowledge of computer software applications to prepare reports, pleadings, statistical reports, and other documents. Knowledge of computer software applications including word processing and spreadsheet or database software.

Supplemental Information

Special requirements:  The ability to reliably travel throughout the county is required.  Finalists are subject to the Washington State Patrol criminal background check and a reference check. Criminal background records are not automatically disqualifying.
