The archology internship with Roads Maintenance Section will provide you with the opportunity to help develop and implement a field investigation strategy for the culturally rich Green River Valley . The intern will utilize King County's CRPP planning tools as well as the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation's WISAARD database. Formal reporting of results with authorship by the intern is a key deliverable of this internship. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to be supervised and mentored by a C ultural Resources Professional !
Job Duties
Who is Eligible: This position is open to graduate students currently enrolled and continuing in the fall of 2023 from an accredited institution. Prior graduate coursework in archeology is preferred.
Working Conditions:
The work associated with this position will be performed through a combination of teleworking complemented with onsite work and meetings as needed. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. The individual in this position will be meeting with community members and organizations and will be expected to engage in face-to-face interactions, as COVID-19 restrictions permit, throughout unincorporated King County.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will be joining an innovative and progressive team that is redefining how we work as we transition to the department's hybrid environment.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
King County is the local service provider for the roughly quarter-million people who live in the unincorporated areas of the county; taken together, Unincorporated King County would be the second-largest city in the state. The Department of Local Services includes a Director's Office with a Community Service Area group, and the Road Services and Permitting Divisions. Together, this department provides a single executive point of accountability for delivery of local services to all of unincorporated King County.
The King County Road Services Division designs, builds, operates and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated areas of King County in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner to protect the public's investment and facilitate safe travel. The division is committed to ensuring the county's transportation system is safe and efficient for all uses and modes of travel. The Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road and 182 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs, 78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.

Job Duties
- Conduct archaeological field investigations, including use of shovel and auger probes;
- Utilize handheld GPS unit;
- Complete field documentation including State Archaeological Site Inventory Forms;
- Write technical reports on the results of fieldwork;
- Collect samples in the field suitable for radiocarbon assay;
- Analyze precontact artifacts for reporting purposes (any specialization, i.e. lithics, fauna, shellfish, etc.);
- Prepare artifacts for permanent curation;
- Coordinate fieldwork with federally recognized Tribes;
- Mark for and request Utility Locates prior to fieldwork;
- Support on-going and emergent needs, including construction monitoring and inadvertent discoveries.
- Enrolled as a graduate student with prior archaeological coursework from an accredited institution;
- Is skilled in working effectively and cooperatively with internal and external customers with a variety of individuals from diverse background;
- W orking knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
- F amiliarity with the use of GIS;
- Is a self-starter with ability to work effectively in a team environment;
- Has good time management skills in order to support co-workers and project work;
- E xcellent written and verbal communication skills.

Working Conditions:
- Work Hours: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week.
- Work Location: Primarily field work planning and conducting archeological investigations in rural areas of unincorporated King County and occasional work at King Street Center in Seattle. Position will also telework based on business needs.
- Has, or is eligible for a Washington State Driver's License
- Environment: The position requires that the individual visit a variety of project sites including many that may be in pre-design and/or construction phase. This may necessitate the ability to traverse rough terrain or construction sites which generally include uneven surfaces. It also may require the ability to climb rough grades or ladders including work on raised/lowered platforms that may require appropriate safety gear. Work involves walking moderate distances on even and uneven surfaces in the field year-round in varying weather conditions.
- FLSA Status: This position is exempt from the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is not overtime eligible.
- Union Representation: This position is not union represented.
