Summary

The responsibilities of this classification include independently representing Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) at Family Treatment Court hearings, trials and depositions; providing legal training, consultation and representation for volunteer CASA, and providing case-specific legal advice for program staff.

Work location:  This position is located at the Children and Family Justice Center in Seattle, but will require travel to the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, WA and the King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle.

Work scheduleThis is a half-time position working 17.5 hours per week.  Salary is pro-rated from the full-time rate listed above.  Work schedule is subject to change.  Currently, Family Treatment Court hearings are scheduled on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and is not overtime-eligible.

Job Duties

The following duties are not intended to represent the entire functional capacity of the position at the task level:

  • Independently represent CASAs at Superior Court hearings, trials, depositions, related motions, settlement conferences, and note motions on CASA's behalf.
  • Provide legal advice and consultation to CASAs regarding specific cases to which the CASA is assigned.  Such advice includes, but is not limited to, review and editing of CASA reports, assistance in negotiating agreed orders and settlements, and preparing for trials and hearings.
  • Attend dependency and termination fact-finding trials, pre-trial conferences, review hearings, motion hearings, shelter care hearings, mediations and settlement conferences.
  • Advise program staff and volunteers of new procedures, court decisions and statutes in a specialized area of practice.
  • Provide legal advice and training to program staff concerning CASA and case-related matters.
  • Research, write and respond to briefs, memoranda, pleadings and other legal papers.  File motions, finalize CASA reports for filing when submitted for highly contested matters;  prepare proposals to various operations committees.
  • Provide orientation training regarding legal issues for new CASAs and ongoing training related to Dependency and/or CASA practice.  Prepare training materials.
  • Interact with defense lawyers, AAGs, social workers, CASA volunteers, professional and lay witnesses, program staff, court staff, Judges, Commissioners, unrepresented parents and members of the public.
  • Participate in various projects and committees concerned with the role of the CASA program in relation to the justice system, other governmental entities, and the public.
  • Provide statistical workload information to program manager as necessary.

 

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Law degree, active membership in good standing in the Washington State Bar Association, and five years of relevant trial and motion experience in either family law or dependency law, specifically domestic violence, substance abuse, child abuse/neglect, and mental health issues.  Experience in negotiating and training.

Supplemental Information

Special requirements:  Finalists must successfully pass a criminal background checks and reference check.  A valid Washington State driver's license or be able to travel throughout the County by alternate means.
