The Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) is seeking a skilled, knowledgeable, and highly motivated team player to serve as the Business and Finance Officer II (BFOII) to be the Claim Specialist within the department's Finance and Contracts Services section.

The BFO II position presents a unique opportunity to an individual seeking to bring their experience and utilize and expand their skills in processing and follow up of insurance claims. This is a new position within the FACS team in the BHRD, (Behavioral Health and Recovery Division).

This position reports directly to the Behavioral Health Accounting Manager (BFO IV). It will collaborate closely with other functional units within the Behavioral Health programs and finance team.

WORK SCHEDULE/CONDITIONS: This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm. This position meets the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible with supervisory pre-approval. This position is represented by PROTEC17.

MISSION CRITICAL POSITION STATUS: This position has been designated Non-Mission Critical. Unless otherwise directed by the County Executive, department director or agency head, all employees, regardless of designation, are expected to report to work or request leave during an emergency or inclement weather. REMOTE AND ONSITE WORK DETAILS: Employees in this role work remotely from a home location, with onsite reporting requirements. The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly.

REMOTE WORK LOCATION REQUIREMENT: Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance of King County worksites to meet onsite reporting requirements.

Job Duties



  1. Following up on unpaid or rejected claims.
  2. Resolving claim issues.
  3. Submitting corrected claims.
  4. Handling appeals.
  5. Account reconciliation.
  6. Communicating with insurance companies and other stakeholders.
  7. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of insurance policies and claim processing procedures.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.


Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Understanding of insurance claims processing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of insurance and claim portals.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Skill in problem solving, decision making and analysis.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and mainframe systems, internet portals, spreadsheet and database management software.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of coding and billing requirements/billing guidelines.
  • Knowledge of SERI guidelines.
