Community Outreach Coordinator
- Summary
Help start an exciting new program and create opportunities for engagement and relationship building with local communities. This position will help launch the newly developed mobile engagement unit and coordinate interns working in various park locations within historically underserved areas throughout South King County.
We are seeking a skilled Community Outreach Coordinator (Communications Specialist II) to launch an exciting new mobile engagement team at King County Parks. This position will serve in the Community Investments and Engagement Section. This section has approximately 20 staff members focused on communications, community engagement, and grantmaking. This position will coordinate programming in King County Parks with the goal to make parks welcoming, activate parks through partnership and activities, orient new users to our parks, and engage communities in conversations to ensure that we are meeting their needs. This is a new program that will work with cohorts of 2-3 interns to carry out engagement activities.
Our ideal candidate enjoys engaging with the public and will be highly organized with the ability to manage time wisely while balancing multiple priorities. We seek a candidate who is a versatile learner with excellent communication and customer service skills.

Duration: This Term-Limited-Temporary (TLT)/ Special Duty Assignment (SDA) position is anticipated to be up to three years in duration.- TLT: Open to the public and all King County employees
- SDA: Open to current King County career service or appointed employees who have passed their initial probationary period.
Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer. King County is doing its part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and remains committed to reducing our carbon footprint.
Work Location: Primarily teleworking and the King Street Center, 201 S. Jackson St., Seattle, WA 98104.
Work Schedule: This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. This full-time position works a 40-hour work week.- Job Duties
Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role, you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work. You will collaborate with parks staff to develop, execute, and evaluate communication strategies and plans for projects in various regions across the County. You will:
- Help develop and implement a mobile community outreach and engagement program.
- Under the guidance of leadership, onboard, train, and coordinate the efforts of intern cohorts.
- Coordinate and communicate with both internal and external partners to deliver outstanding customer service and community engagement to priority areas.
- Gather feedback from both internal and external stakeholders to assess and improve outreach activities.
- Coordinate with larger work unit to support additional outreach events as necessary.
- Develop and deliver person-to-person engagement activities in coordination with interns in King County Parks.
- Work with teams to integrate equity and social justice practices into public engagement and programming in parks.

Required Qualifications:
- Experience developing communication plans that inform the public or target audience.
- Experience delivering communications to Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and communities with limited English proficiency.
- Project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and work on teams.
- Experience with marketing, promotions, and outreach projects.
- Experience working calmly and quickly under deadline.

The Most Competitive Candidates Will Have:- Education and public engagement experience.
- Experience working with interns.
Necessary Special Requirements: Valid Washington State Driver’s license and ability to travel to parks throughout King County on a regular basis.
Physical Requirements:- Work requires the ability to operate a King County vehicle.
- Work requires the ability to lift and move items, such as loading supplies in and out of vehicles and setting up/taking down canopy, tables, and other program supplies.
- Work may involve walking moderate distances on even and uneven surfaces in the field, year-round, and in varying weather conditions.
Work Environment: This position will involve a mix of telecommuting and in-person public engagement in King County Parks.- Supplemental Information
