ABOUT THE POSITION: Corrections Supervisors serve in one of the most important and influential roles within the Juvenile Division as a whole. They have an essential responsibility to ensure staff, operations and various activities run safely and effectively. Supervisors also serve as mentors, role models, decision-makers and leaders to promote values and ethics that build a healthy organization and thriving work environment. The Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention is accepting applications for Corrections Supervisor. The individual selected for this career service position will become part of the cultural, restorative and positive change within the Juvenile Division.
Incumbents in this class are expected to promote a safe and secure environment, promote professional excellence, encourage collaboration and cooperation, provide constructive feedback and communication, provide leadership and guidance to staff, build relationships across different roles and stakeholders, manage difficult situations, intervene and diffuse escalating issues, and apply critical decision-making that meets overall mission and goals of the Division.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL:
- Transparency: Maintain transparency when communicating information to staff, the public and stakeholders. In order to effectively achieve this, unbiased investigatory processes should be implemented to ensure fair and consistent disciplinary actions/recommendations are made.
- Promote the "Big Picture": Possess the ability to understand and promote the "big picture" related to the Department's mission, vision and goals. The individual selected for this position should also have a clear understanding of the financial impacts their decisions make on department operations.
- Build Strong Relationships: Recognize and support the need for strong working relationships through team building amongst staff and outside stakeholders. This is achieved by taking an active role in employee engagement and development, maintaining a positive attitude and being approachable.
- Accountability: Make decisions based on department policies, procedures and inn accordance with industry standards and best practices. The Corrections Supervisor must be accountable for the decisions made.
- Promote Training: Encourage staff to receive ongoing training to ensure safe and secure management of the facilities.
- Job Duties
Corrections Supervisors serve in a leadership capacity over various areas of operations within the Juvenile Division. These areas include: Admitting/Releasing/Visitation, Central Control, Living Halls, Scheduling and various Administrative Duties. Work is performed under the supervision of the Chief of Operations/Security, Division Director and/or designees. Duties include but are not limited to:
- DETENTION OPERATIONS: Supervise and manage Juvenile Detention Officers on duty during an assigned shift. Responsibilities include: facility security, detention operations, supervise use of force, emergency management, interaction with other county departments, arresting agencies, visitors, youth families, attorneys and other public officials as needed to resolve conflicts and convey department/division policies. Conduct various quality checks, facility inspections and execute compliance with all necessary operational and standard requirements.
- COURT: Supervise and manage Juvenile Detention Officers assigned to escort, transfer and the transport youth to and from court. May require interaction with presiding Judges and other court officials to resolve conflicts and convey department/division policies.
- SCHEDULING: Perform scheduling duties for both staff and supervisors to ensure there is adequate coverage for operational needs. Adhere to all scheduling policies, agreements and established practices to ensure all necessary posts are staffed in an equitable and fair manner.
- ADMINISTRATIVE, CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND OTHER DUTIES: Prepare written reports, summaries, correspondence and emails to effectively communicate and advance department/division objectives. Ensure appropriate operations and administrative policies and procedures are implemented and followed. Train and instruct staff regarding policies and operational procedures. Prepare performance evaluations for probationary staff, and provide ongoing performance feedback. Represents the department at meetings with outside agencies, attorneys and other departments as needed. Provide excellent customer service by maintaining professional behavior and communication at all times. Corrections Supervisors will perform other duties as assigned within the job scope and area of assignment.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelor's degree in social services, law and justice, or a related field; and,
- Two (2) years of full-time work experience in a correctional facility; and,
- Demonstrated ability to identify, assess and prioritize situations that require intervention and ability to solve problems creatively; and,
- Demonstrated skills in effective communication, both written and oral; and,
- Demonstrated ability to act in a tactful and diplomatic manner on sensitive issues with diverse groups; and,
- Demonstrated ability to build and foster collaborative relationships across several levels of staff.
PLEASE NOTE: The equivalent of directly related full-time work experience can be substituted for a Bachelor's degree. Experience as a supervisor in any setting will be considered as well.
MOST COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE: Current Juvenile Detention Sub-Supervisors will be considered most competitive provided the minimum qualifications have been met.- Supplemental Information

WORK SCHEDULE: This is a regular career service, forty (40) hour per week, overtime eligible position. Schedule may be adjusted as needed to address staffing needs or other issues, or as needed for required training. Schedule is subject to bargaining unit bid processes. Juvenile Corrections Supervisors work ten-hour shifts in a four-day work week. The individual selected for this position must be available to work varied shifts, including weekends, evenings and holidays. Assignments are subject to bargaining unit bid process. Actual assignment is subject to change due to collective bargaining unit bid processes.

SELECTION PROCESS: The selection process may include a Subject Matter Expert (SME) review, written assessments, oral board and final interview. The individual selected for this position will be required to complete a thorough background investigation process, including fingerprinting, criminal history check, a lie detection evaluation, psychological evaluation, reference checks, medical physical and other tests as deemed necessary. A valid Washington State Driver's License or alternate ability to travel around the county is required by the time of hire.
