Crew Supervisor, Community Work Program (Temporary - SDA or TLT)

Come join our team! The Community Corrections Division is looking for a Crew Supervisor, for the Community Work Program (CWP). This position oversees landscape installation, maintenance of mitigation plantings, other grounds work (mowing, pruning, trimming, weeding, etc.), and litter/garbage clean-up assigned to participants in the CWP. Crews work in and around King County facilities, parks, roads, bridges, wetlands, natural areas, and park and rides, and for other contract cities throughout King County.
Incumbents must have the ability to lift and move supplies (weighing up to 15 lbs.) and perform work requiring use of power equipment (power trimmers, mowers, chain saws, hand tools, etc.), prolonged standing and walking for extended periods of time, overseeing and training participants in general landscape installation and maintenance, as well as other landscape work.
This is a Special Duty opportunity for King County Career Service employees or Term Limited Temporary (TLT) opportunity for external candidates. This opportunity is expected to last up to 24 months. However, special duty assignment durations are subject to change and may either be ended earlier or extended as needed. If the assignment is extended, other limitations may apply.
About the program:
Reporting to the Department of Adult & Juvenile Detention (DAJD) Community Corrections Division, Community Work Program Manager, incumbent will be responsible for the supervision, monitoring and coordination of participants assigned to CWP, serving a clientele of an average of 35-50 participants per day, with each supervisor being responsible for a Work Crew of an average of 5 – 12 participants. Participants include misdemeanant offenders who have been assigned to the Community Work Program and are working in the program in lieu of jail, payment of fines, community service, or as conditions of a diversion agreement.

Work location:
The Community Work Program is located at 925 Hiawatha Place S, Seattle WA; however, daily work is conducted at various site locations in and around King County facilities and other contract agencies throughout King County. Frequent travel is required.
Work schedule:
The current opening is for a 40-hour work week and is overtime eligible. Candidates are required to be available to work shifts Monday through Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., as needed. It is anticipated that this position will work on weekends (Saturdays and/or Sundays). Schedule assignments are subject to the staffing needs of the department and bargaining unit bid processes as applicable and may be changed.

- Supervise, monitor and coordinate the duties assigned to a group of 5 –12 Community Work Program participants performing a wide variety of landscape maintenance activities.
- Develop, plan, organize and schedule the work activities of the crew, provide instruction/training, inspect work for adherence to established instructions and work standards.
- Train participants in the execution of assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Prepare and maintain records and reports related to program participants and work crew activities. Prepare written reports regarding program participants, safety measures, accidents/incidents, and related activities.
- Assist CWP management in the efficient operation of work crews and monitor performance of program participants.
- Oversee the safety of work crew participants and ensure the proper use of landscape equipment including power trimmers and mowers. Recommend corrective actions to resolve unsafe working conditions.
- Staff and issue supplies and equipment, maintain records/inventory of supplies and equipment assigned to the Community Work Program.
- Perform landscape maintenance tasks as required by client contract obligations. Lift and move supplies and equipment weighing up to 15 lbs. Perform work requiring prolonged standing and walking for extended periods of time as required to oversee, demonstrate and/or perform general landscape maintenance work duties.
- While at the job site, serve as the program representative/liaison to contract agency staff and the general public regarding program participants and landscape work.
- Perform other duties as assigned within scope and area of responsibility.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Required:
One (1) year or more experience in:- Managing a work group including planning the day's work;
- Delegating tasks to be completed;
- Overseeing/monitoring work and;
- Providing training and constructive feedback so that program standards are met.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, and good time management skills.
- Willing and able to work Saturdays and/or Sundays when required.
- Valid Washington State driver's license with ability to drive 10-passenger van and equipment trailer.
- Ability to lift and move supplies and equipment (weighing up to 15 lbs.), prolonged standing and walking for extended periods of time.
Two (2) years or more experience minimum in one of the following:- Experience supervising work crews in a grounds maintenance/landscaping or similar environment to include experience managing and coordinating work crew projects/functions;
- Experience performing grounds maintenance work, including installing and maintaining landscape plantings, preferably in natural areas and mitigation sites;
- Experience managing, motivating, directing, and supervising offender population or other workers in a similar work crew environment.
