Jail Health Services, a division of Public Health | Seattle & King County , is seeking two (2) Short-Term Temporary (part time) Jail Health Dental Assistants to join our team! Dental Assistants work under the supervision of a Dentist and assist with providing dental care and performing other related duties as required in a correctional dental clinic setting.
Jail Health Dental provides urgent and emergent dental care to patients detained in the King County adult jail facilities. The jail is a 24/7 locked facility.
About Jail Health Services:
JHS provides needed health and social services to the incarcerated population located in the King County jails - King County Correctional Facility (KCCF) in Seattle, WA and Maleng Regional Justice Center (MRJC) in Kent, WA. The primary services we provide include medical, dental, mental health, social and release planning services, treatment of substance use disorders, and pharmaceutical services. We care about the patients we serve and their health outcomes. Our Division includes over 230 employees and a bi-annual budget of over $80 million.
The purpose of JHS is to assure that high-quality health and human services are available to the incarcerated population in the King County adult correctional facilities: the King County Correctional Facility (KCCF) in Seattle and the Maleng Regional Justice Center (MRJC) in Kent. The JHS vision is Opening doors to healthier, happier lives, and the mission is To assess and stabilize serious health problems for the detained population of the King County Correctional Facility and the Maleng Regional Justice Center with a focus on transition from jail.
Staffed 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year, JHS provides a broad range of health care to all individuals booked into the jails. For patients with serious mental health or medical conditions, special housing units (psychiatric and infirmary) along with a higher level of services and medical monitoring are provided. Since the patient population varies both in numbers as well as in acuity of health conditions, staffing is adapted and flexed to meet the constantly changing needs of the population.
JHS staff manage the complex health needs of underserved populations many of whom come to the facility without access to care in the community and with decompensated acute and chronic health conditions.

Work Schedule:
Primary shift assignment for Short Term Temporary Dental Assistants (following orientation) is afternoon/evening shift, weekends, and holiday shifts at KCCF in Seattle. The position may also include occasional day shifts at KCCF and MRJC.

Job Duties
- Act as a chairside assistant for oral surgery and other procedures as needed.
- Take diagnostic quality intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs.
- Apply topical preventative agents when indicated.
- Take and review patient medical and dental history and present relevant info to the Dentist. Assist dentist with emergency procedures.
- Perform other duties as allowed by the Washington State Dental Practice Act 18.32. Educate patients in oral hygiene and anticipatory guidance health behaviors.
- Maintain patient flow.
- Responsible for accurate completion of encounter forms as per Dental Program Policies and Procedures and Medicaid billing guidelines.
- Accurately document medical record information under the direction of the dentist. Maintain patient files.
- Maintain operatories and dental spaces in good working order and ensure compliance with OSHA/WISHA requirements.
- Clean and sterilize dental instruments in accordance with State and Federal requirements. Perform routine dental equipment maintenance (clinical and portable) and process repairs. Maintain dental supply inventory and ordering.
- Schedule appointments, greet and reassure clients.
- Complete client registrations and conduct follow-up with patients as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Current registration as a Dental Assistant in the State of Washington.
- Completion of a recognized Dental Assistant course program or equivalent experience. Working knowledge of methods and techniques used in dental assisting.
- Working knowledge of terminology, materials, equipment and instruments used in dentistry. Working knowledge of dental radiograph techniques and principles.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage your own and patient schedules. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain patient files and other records in accordance with practice guidelines and applicable regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage behavioral issues in a dental clinic setting. Demonstrated ability to address conflict in a direct and professional manner.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with clients of diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds as well as the ability to work with clients for whom English is a second language.
- Experience working with interpreters in a clinical setting.
- Experience in a correctional health care or public/community health clinic desired.
- Experience with using EPIC patient management software systems (or similar electronic health record).
- Applicants bilingual in English and Spanish highly desired.
- Applicants bilingual in English and Arabic, Mandarin, or Cantonese desired.
