Summary

King County International Airport (also known as Boeing Field) is searching for an exceptional leader to serve as its Deputy Director. King County is one of America's fastest-growing regions, and Executive Dow Constantine is building partnerships and working with employees to meet the key challenges facing the Northwest—equity and social justice, climate change, and regional mobility.

To meet these challenges, the Deputy Director will play a key role in advancing high visibility aviation-related projects and the impact on many citizens. Many projects and initiatives pursued by the airport division have far-reaching political implications with the community.

ABOUT KING COUNTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (BOEING FIELD)
King County International Airport (KCIA)—also known as Boeing Field (BFI)—is one of the busiest primary non-hub airports in the nation. Just four miles south of downtown Seattle, it averages around 200,000 operations (takeoffs and landings) each year. In 2001, it was named by the National Air Transportation Association as one of the “100 Most Needed Airports” in the United States.

KCIA ranks among the most successful public investments in state history. The airport’s annual economic impact is $3.5 billion - supporting over 18,000 jobs and providing $1.8 billion in labor income in the county. The airport’s 150 tenant businesses also directly support over 5,000 jobs in the local economy.

The airport serves small commercial passenger airlines, cargo carriers - including UPS and private aircraft owners, helicopters, corporate jets, and military and other aircraft. It is also the final delivery center for the Boeing Company’s 737 and serves as its military flight center along with other Boeing operations. The Museum of Flight is located there, with its wide variety of aircraft and exhibits showcasing aviation history. It is frequently host to celebrities and dignitaries, including the President of the United States, who prefer Boeing Field because of its proximity to downtown Seattle and other commercial areas.

KEY DELIVERABLES AND EXPECTATIONS
Reporting to the Airport Director, the Deputy Director is responsible for providing collaborative leadership and a clearly articulated vision for managing the daily operations of the airport.

 The Deputy Director will:

  • Assist in directing the daily operational needs of the airport including managing daily operations and delivering on the capital improvement program.
  • Serve as a key leader on the senior leadership team responsible for airport operations; runway design and construction; emergency response; intergovernmental and community relations; and administrative services.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of strategic goals, vision, workforce management, performance measures, strategies, policies, best practices, and initiatives.
  • Direct and shape systems to promote an organizational culture that supports continuous improvement (LEAN) and embraces equity and social justice for employees.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and sustained change with a strong sense of how to develop and offer new products and services.
  • Play a role in growing the next generation of aviation; continue to champion the internship program; inspire next generations of aviation leaders. Utilize internal and external resources, technology, and continuous improvement techniques to report metrics, improve processes, create more capacity, and deliver greater value to our customers and community.
  • Serve as acting director in the absence of the director.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR THIS ROLE WILL:
  • Have a strong background in airport senior management and operations including fiscal management, economic business development, technical airport operations, maintenance and procedures, and administrative and field operations.
  • Is a champion for Equity & Social Justice. Understands that systematic racism and its long-term effects are pervasive in our society. Are comfortable having candid and sincere conversations with all employees and stakeholders about race and equity in our work.
  • Bring a background in directing and providing leadership to a unionized, and multi-faceted airport organizations, including working collaboratively at all levels.
  • Have an exceptional record of successfully managing, developing, and/or implementing strategic initiatives, policies, and systems to achieve these outcomes.
  • Be customer-focused and comfortable advising and partnering with senior and executive-level management about complex initiatives, polices, and issues.
  • Understand how to manage complex projects including scoping and organizing resources, developing work programs, and facilitating multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Have strategies and ideas to continue to build on a culture of employee engagement which supports the development, learning, coaching, and team building necessary for the workforce of the future.
  • Be a Champion of LEAN processes and standard work.
  • Be able to persevere and adapt as required, while working in a multi-faceted and sometimes ambiguous environment; 
  • OR any combination of education and experience.
COMPENSATION & HOW TO APPLY

TEMPORARY TELECOMMUTING REQUIREMENT
The work associated with this position will be performed remotely, at least through July 5, 2021 in compliance with King County’s telecommuting mandate. It is possible that the work will be primarily performed remotely on an ongoing basis after July 5, 2021.  
 
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop  and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.  Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.  There will be situations where the employee is required to report to a County worksite.  Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.
