The Criminal Division of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is seeking multiple highly motivated attorneys to join our office as lateral and/or term-limited Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys.

- Job Duties
KCPAO deputies cover work at courthouses in Redmond, Kent and Seattle. All deputies are expected to be able to work at any of those locations. The courts are currently allowing virtual appearances for some calendars due to COVID-19, but in-person appearances will be necessary for hearings as well as for jury trials. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.
At this time, the PAO is welcoming applications for both lateral and term-limited positions. Candidates should indicate their preference in the supplemental questions. This is an open and continuous recruitment that will be used to fill multiple positions over the next few months. The post will remain up until open positions have been filled.
The term-limited DPA contract is for 12 months, with the possibility of extension. Term-limited DPAs are primarily assigned to work in our District Court Unit. This position will provide excellent courtroom experience, especially for new or inexperienced lawyers. Potential work assignments include handling gross misdemeanor cases in the District Court Unit, assisting with mainstream felony filings, and covering felony calendars. Term-limited DPAs may also be assigned to work in our Involuntary Treatment Unit representing local psychiatric hospitals in civil commitment hearings. DPAs assigned to this unit work closely with mental health professionals to conduct civil mental health commitment trials and hearings.

- Strong legal research, writing and analytical skills.
- Strong work ethic and commitment to working effectively in a team environment.
- Strong commitment to Equity and Social Justice issues including working on personal cultural competency.
- Passion and willingness to learn trial skills.
- Must be Washington State Bar qualified.
- Member in good standing with the Washington State Bar.
- Able to work at any of our three locations (Seattle, Kent & Redmond).
- Must submit to a criminal history check.
- U.S. Citizenship (per RCW 36.27 and 29A.04 and Article VI of the WA Constitution).
