Disease Research & Intervention Specialist - Data-to-Care- Field DRIS
- Summary
Public Health's Prevention Division is looking for an Disease Research and Intervention Specialist to work on multiple Data-to-Care (D2C) projects. The primary purpose of this position is to find people not accessing life-saving HIV care and to help them overcome their barriers so they may achieve viral suppression. A harm reduction framework will be applied. There may be substantial field work involved, which will entail going out in a team of two staff members to peoples’ homes or homeless shelters or encampments. Substantial training in HIV outreach, security, confidentiality, safety, medical care referrals, and social services referrals will be required. Many different D2C projects and other people working on those will be involved, so the successful candidate needs excellent communication skills. Spanish or other language skills are not required but will be an asset. The successful candidate will need to be comfortable and confident working with people who are homeless, people with substance use disorders, and/or people with mental health issues. The chosen candidate will also need to learn to use and update multiple databases for work assignment and monitoring.

WHO MAY APPLY: This position is a Special Duty Assignment or Term Limited Temporary position for one year. It is open to all qualified applicants.
WORK SCHEDULE: After a standard full time daytime schedule training period for about one month (Monday to Friday 8:30 to 5:00 pm), this position requires evening and weekend work. The exact schedule is somewhat flexible, however the preferred hours are 9:30am to 6pm Monday through Friday with occasional evening and weekends.

WORK LOCATION: This position will primarily work at the Ninth and James Building with telecommuting as needed. As needed, the position may be deployed to other Public Health Centers and sites throughout King County.

- Job Duties
- Contact people living with HIV who are not in care by mailing letters, making cold-calls, sending text messages, and visiting their residences.
- Using motivational interviewing skills, or other techniques help people living with HIV who are not accessing medical care get in to (or back into) medical care
- Administer a survey and handle incentives for out-of-care people to help identify and overcome care barriers.
- Maintain detailed records in multiple locations/systems.
- Follow strict data security and confidentiality protocols.
- Participate in trainings as required.

- Ability to work independently and to self-motivate to meet project goals and deadlines.
- Enthusiasm for and ability to approach strangers and quickly build rapport.

- Basic knowledge of HIV-related issues and medical terminology.
- Ability to establish trust with people of varying sexual orientation & gender identities, racial/ethnic backgrounds, and socioeconomic status.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to learn and work within specific computer databases.
- Ability to ask strangers difficult questions on difficult topics: e.g., sexual abuse/assault, physical / psychological abuse, mental health, substance abuse.
- Have persistence in the face of rejection and non-response.
- Basic to intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products, including Excel and Word
Desired Qualifications:- Experience in conducting structured or research interviews.
- Experience with HIV.
- Experience with medical terminology and medical records.
- Experience working with diverse communities, including sexual and gender minorities, people who inject drugs, people living homeless, and other disadvantaged persons
- Knowledge of local medical facilities and social services for people living with HIV, men who have sex with men, and transgender persons
- Special consideration given to applicants fluent in Spanish, or another language other than English.
