- Summary
- The Assessment, Policy Development, and Evaluation unit at Public Health Seattle & King County is seeking Public Health Data Analysts who are highly skilled at collecting, preparing, analyzing, visualizing, interpreting, and disseminating quantitative population health data in collaboration with partners, including community-based organizations and community members. We seek to operationalize and embed equity in all of our work. We are seeking data analysts who will bring their lived experiences as well as their technical competencies to work on a dynamic portfolio of projects that work to improve the health of King County residents. This position reports to an Epidemiologist II.The work will focus on conducting quantitative analyses using public health population and performance datasets, particularly focused on chronic disease, health behaviors, health care visits, social determinants of health, and parent-child health, and sharing findings from these analyses in a variety of formats including data visualizations and presentations. Collaborations occur across epidemiologists, program managers, community and academic partners, and other King County agencies. This position is based in the Assessment, Policy Development, and Evaluation (APDE), Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention (CDIP), and Communities of Opportunity (COO) division of PHSKC. APDE is a nationally recognized leader in community health assessment, providing health assessment data and analysis to inform planning, policies, and actions, and develop innovative interventions to improve the health of King County residents. Who May Apply:This full-time position is open to all qualified applicants.Work Schedule:The normal work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will, from time to time, require evening or weekend meetings.
The work associated with this position will be performed predominantly through teleworking complemented with onsite work and meetings as needed. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required, including the wearing of masks in some situations. - Prepare and conduct analyses using large datasets to guide and support public health priorities (e.g. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, Healthy Youth Survey, Medicaid claims, Medicare claims, electronic health records, birth certificate, death certificate, hospitalization, Census, public health program data, etc.).
- Identify key findings, interpret results, and develop/maintain data visualizations that highlight meaningful data to inform needs assessments and evaluations.
- Support data collection, including testing of data collection instruments and monitoring quality of databases.
- Prepare information to clearly communicate findings, and develop presentations, reports, websites, and data visualizations for technical and non-technical audiences and stakeholders.

- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
- Deep knowledge of equity and social justice principles and practices; lived experience with and understanding of the effects of place-, race- and policy & systems-based inequities on communities of color.
- Demonstrated knowledge of population-based public health practices and principles.
- Experience conducting quantitative analyses, using datasets, spreadsheets, charts, maps, interactive visualizations, and/or databases.
- Experience preparing and presenting data and conclusions in reports, papers, dashboards and presentations to non-technical audiences.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Skill working independently, as part of a team, and working with non-technical audiences and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work with, successfully collaborate, and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including community members, agency representatives and partners.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct projects within timeline and budget.
- Skill and demonstrated proficiency in: Microsoft Office products (such as Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams); database creation and maintenance, project management, and software for quantitative analysis (such as Stata, R, SQL, Python, Tableau, Github).
OR- Any equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the work.
Desired Qualification:- Local experience in King County or Washington State
- Prior experience working with quantitative public health datasets, such as Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, Healthy Youth Survey, Medicaid, Medicare, electronic health records, birth certificate, death certificate, hospitalization, Census/American Community Survey, or public health program data
- Prior experience preparing and analyzing data using one or more advanced statistical software (e.g. R, Stata, SQL, Python, and/or GIS packages)
- 1+ years of experience visualizing data interactively using Tableau or similar software
- Background and experience in public health informatics, epidemiology, biostatistics, health services, health economics, or public policy
