King County Parks is looking for a Forest Technician to join the Environmental Policy & Initiatives Unit! King County Parks is committed to forest protection and health and is growing its forestry program to address the needs of its large inventory of natural lands. Forests provide numerous benefits in our community and this position will be instrumental in the delivery of them in such areas that include but are not limited to: storing carbon, improving salmon habitat, providing timber, lowering temperatures in urban areas, providing human health benefits, improving water quality and regulating water quantity, providing recreation opportunities, and supporting cultural heritage and historic values. This position will play a key role contributing to a talented team comprised of staff and contractors to achieve ambitious forestry goals on Parks property, as well as provide support for the county's Forest Carbon Program and other policy development needs.

Working Conditions:
The work associated with this position will be performed through a combination of teleworking complemented with onsite work and meetings as needed. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required, including the wearing of masks in some situations . King County is doing its part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and remains committed to reducing our carbon footprint.

Job Duties
- Forest Stewardship Planning: Assess conditions of county-managed forestland and help develop forest stewardship plans that guide future restoration and management. Activities include field data collection and analysis to determine forest stand conditions, such as applying the Forest Landscape Assessment Tool (FLAT). Work with other forest program staff, contractors, and partners to develop and revise forest stewardship plans.
- Forestland Restoration and Management: Support implementation of forest restoration and management tasks. Help develop WA DNR Forest Practices Act permits and support forestry staff with reporting. Support timber pre-sale activities, including timber cruising, boundary layout, stream buffer delineation and road/culvert assessments. Oversee buyers and consultants performing forest management activities. Serve as the primary DNRP point of contact for contractors performing restoration and management actions on County-managed forestland. Assist with implementation of one or more 30-year Forest Plan pilot projects.
- General Forest Program Support: Help manage County-wide forest data, including data collection, analysis, mapping, and reporting. Install permanent carbon plots and collect carbon stocking data from new and existing plots and manage data for the Rural Forest Carbon Program. Establish and maintain permanent photo and data collection plots; collect and analyze data and report on results.
- Customer Service and Outreach: Respond to public and partner inquiries related to forest conservation in King County. Participate in outreach efforts to educate communities, landowners and the general public about King County's forest conservation efforts. Review and update forestry-related websites and create new outreach materials that support various forestry programs.
Required Qualifications:
- Passion for natural resource conservation and comfortable spending extended periods of time in rural, undeveloped landscapes.
- Demonstrated experience collecting and assessing basic field data.
- Demonstrated experience supporting forest health assessments and/or implementing forest treatment projects.
- Good written and oral communications skills.
- Experience working as an effective team member.
- Action Oriented: Takes on new opportunities and tough challenges with a sense of urgency, high energy, and enthusiasm. Takes initiative within the scope of the position and exercises strong time management skills

- Bachelor's degree in forestry, natural resource management, environmental policy, or related fields.
- Knowledge of Western Washington forest types and ability to identify the most common trees and shrubs.
- Basic understanding of forest management practices.
- Experience with standard field equipment and comfortable using digital technology, including devices common in forestry (e.g., tablets, GPS navigation systems, range finders).
- Working knowledge of ArcMap to create project maps and compile and edit GIS data sets.
Supplemental Information
Working Conditions:
- Work Location: This position is primarily teleworking with frequent project visits located at various sites throughout King County.
- Environment: The position requires that the individual visit a variety of project sites that may include forest areas with thick trees, brush, and vegetation. This may necessitate the ability to traverse rough terrain covered with slash and brush, which generally include unlevel surfaces. These work areas expose the selected individual to varying weather and environmental conditions such as heat, rain, snow, mud, dust, wind and construction sites in various stages of completion. Work involves walking moderate distances on even and uneven surfaces in the field year-round.
- Work Hours: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday. Weekend, holiday, and evening work will occasionally be required.
- FLSA Status: This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
- Union Representation: This position is not represented by a union.
