Public Health-Seattle & King County is looking for students to work with the King County Medical Examiner’s Office creating a FHIR R4 compliant data flow between our case management system and the state’s vital records system. This position offers an opportunity for students interested in public health informatics to get familiar with local and state data systems, acquire and develop applied forensic epidemiology skills, and gain first hand experience on improving data interoperability between different agencies. This student will work closely with highly trained and experienced informaticians, epidemiologists, and public health practitioners at Public Health – Seattle & King County, and interact frequently with those working at the state level and at national professional organizations.

- Assist with creating a FHIR R4 compliant data flow from the state’s vital records system to KCMEO’s case management system, including installing a FHIR R4 client and other necessary software and performing system testing to verify and validate FHIR response messages
- Support troubleshooting of any message routing issues during FHIR Create, Read, Update, and Delete (CRUD) interactions
- Help coordinate with multiple stakeholders internal and external to KCMEO, including data system users, software providers, project sponsors, and technical supporting groups, to make sure technical needs and project requirements are met
- Draft reports and presentation slides to summarize weekly achievements and issues encountered across testing participants
- Develop an understanding of the uses of the systems, what they need from each other through data flow, and what they will need in the future
- Participate in project meetings with different stakeholders as needed
- Assist with code posting to a GitHub repository as needed
- Query SQL database and other data sources in preparation for internal and external data requests
- Clean data, which may include manual data entry, in preparation for analysis, quality assurance and reporting
- Provide constructive advice for data process optimization as needed
- Perform other job-related duties at KCMEO as assigned
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, INTEREST AND SKILLS:
- Education, skills and strong interest in information technology/computer science, epidemiology, public health, or related field
- Experience or skills in application development or database administration OR any combination of education and experience that clearly demonstrates the ability to perform the job duties of the classification
- Motivated to complete assignments in a timely manner with high quality
- Interest and ability to actively engage in project, ask questions, point out plan flaws, and propose constructive suggestions when appropriate
- Communicate openly, clearly and professionally with collaborating team members
- Willingness to learn new skills and use new tools when needed
- Ability to own and learn from mistakes, failures as well as successes and achievements
- Availability to work 16 or more hours/week
- Previous experience or knowledge on FHIR R4 compliant software and developing, installing, and maintaining FHIR communications
- Interest in a career in public health informatics or forensic epidemiology
- Familiarity with GitHub repositories
- Proficiency with SQL query development for table joining and data selection

WORK LOCATION: Harborview Medical Center, Medical Examiner’s Office located at 908 Jefferson St., Seattle WA 98104.
The work associated with this position may have the possibility of teleworking. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
