King County's Finance and Business Operations Division, Business Development & Contract Conpliance section, is seeking two Graduate Interns!
We are seeking two graduate interns who are action oriented, are eager to try new things, and have a drive for results. These opportunities will provide personal development and exposure to various aspects of public sector finance and business operations while in partnership with seasoned staff mentors.
Work Schedule: These positions are anticipated to start in May or June and will last through the 2023-2024 school year. Typically, our interns work full-time in the summer months and an average of 10 to 20 hours weekly during the school year.
Learning Objective:
GRADUATE INTERN 1 - PRO-EQUITY CONTRACTING:
Our Pro-Equity Contract team is seeking candidates for an internship who are enthusiastic and excited about delivering outstanding customer service in interacting with business seeking certification as a small business and working with contract compliance specialists and others to complete special projects to review and analyze business data for compliance and certification renewals. The scope of work may include, but is not limited to the following:
We are seeking one Graduate intern who is action oriented, eager to explore an array of responsibilities within the Workforce Development Team and drives for results. These opportunities will provide personal development and exposure to various aspects of public sector finance and business operations while in partnership with seasoned staff mentors.
Other Position Information:
This position is Non-Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore is overtime eligible. This position is not represented. These internships will be working from 10 hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week, depending on assignment area and school schedule. During the summer full time work the hours are typically Monday - Thursday 7:00am - 5:00pm, Friday 7:00am - 11:00am.
The work associated with this position will primarily be remote with some in person activities as needed.
Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop. When working remotely employees must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required, including the wearing of masks in some situations. King County is doing its part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and remains committed to reducing our carbon footprint.

- Maintain tangible and electronic records and files.
- Receive, label, log, file and retrieve financial, and/or fiscal data.
- Collect and/or analyze financial, accounting and/or fiscal documents such as personal net worth statements, tax records, revenue, profit /loss statements, etc.
- Create correspondence to obtain any missing or supplemental information needed from a small business for certification.
- Use online resources to confirm business information such as business licenses, property values, ownership status, NAICS codes, etc.
- Conduct outreach to businesses for small business certification, upcoming events, or information on King County procurements.
- Respond to inquiries and/or refer customers to appropriate agencies or departments/divisions. Provide information from established policies, procedures, and other relevant sources to internal and/or external customers. Distribute incoming documents and process outgoing correspondence. Be comfortable in managing sensitive and/or potentially volatile situations.
- Participate in outreach events, develop materials to conduct training to internal county agencies, and external agency partners, organizations, entities with audiences of small business owners, to support community engagement efforts to promote the program to increase the number of participating businesses in it.
- Measure and track prospective businesses, applicants, and certified firms enrolled in the program.

- Review Monthly Priority Hire and Apprenticeship Summary Reports to identify contracts that indicate low attainment towards establish goals/requirements for action by BDCC staff on the Workforce Development Team. Conduct follow up actions as requested.
- Assist and accompany field compliance staff in conducting field site visits, to include creating and drafting documents in MS Word or Excel to assist compliance monitoring activities.
- Monitor the receipt and recording of Priority Hire Grant Applications received. Monitor designated email in-box to receive and route inquiries to Supervisor for to draft replies, as needed.
- Organize pre-jobs paperwork and attend progress meetings to learn fundamentals required for contractors.
- Attend pre-bid meetings to learn public contracting processes. Work with the Apprenticeship Coordinator to conduct at least one pre-bid monthly to gain an understanding of the County's workforce objectives.
- Assist the review and approval of Apprenticeship Utilization Plans to gain an understand of the requisite plan elements required for approval.
- Accompany Priority Hire Staff in attending in-person or virtual meetings of the Regional Public Owner's Group to participate in regional work efforts, as assigned or delegated.
- Review data in the Diversity Compliance Management System to determine contractor compliance with reporting requirements and or established utilization percentages. Consult with Workforce Development Team Supervisor and staff to identify communication actions or appropriate actions to address compliance concerns.
- Work in consultation with Workforce Development Team staff to Communicate with contractors on their monthly Priority Hire and Apprenticeship percentages.
