The Health Literacy Trainer position will be responsible for training design and delivery, curriculum development, project coordination, technical assistance, and coaching on the use of health equity and health literacy practices to improve patient and community outcomes in partnership with a Project Manager, a Communications Specialist, and community partners. The focus may range from the broader social determinants of health to the specific creation of written patient and community education materials for COVID-19. The Health Literacy Trainer position is a 2-year federal grant-funded position under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health, Grant 1CPIMP211243-01-00 with the goal of reducing the disproportional impacts of COVID-19 in King County.

The ideal candidate will have experience developing patient and community education materials using health equity and health literacy best practices, training others to do so, and successfully engaging diverse audiences of all levels through facilitated instructor-led training programs. They will possess strong interpersonal, problem solving, and technical skills, as well as be able to carry out daily work with a high degree of autonomy, customer service, communication, teamwork, and timeliness.

Job Duties

  • Design, implement, and facilitate programs and trainings to increase health equity and health literacy competency among King County employees and partner agencies, including the use of such practices in the creation of patient and community education materials
  • Engage in one-on-one coaching, training, and mentoring to improve the adoption and use of high-quality health equity and health literacy practices by those involved in all levels of patient and community education materials creation, including development, testing and dissemination
  • Design, implement, and facilitate programs and trainings to build capacity of others to provide health equity and health literacy training and technical assistance that incorporates social justice principles and the social determinants of health
  • Assist in the development of job aids, facilitation guides, manuals, interactive exercises, and other material to enhance adult learning
  • Facilitate, participate, and serve as a consultant in critical conversations throughout the County and with partner agencies to support the advancement and institutionalization of health equity and health literacy practices
  • Evaluate learning programs, and use data to identify opportunities to continuously improve
  • Research and advise on leading edge, innovative health equity and health literacy practices, including policy and systems change

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Required Experience

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the work, including lived experience or experience in related or non-traditional fields
  • Experience developing patient and community education materials using health equity and health literacy best practices
  • Experience shifting systems and institutionalizing practices to improve health literacy within organizations
  • Experience analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, prototyping, and evaluating training and coaching interventions
  • Experience and passion for delivering both virtual and in-person classroom training
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to use equity and health literacy practice in all facets of the job, including interacting with colleagues, with agency partners, and in trainings
  • Familiarity working within medical systems and with medical professionals, including knowledge of the specific challenges and opportunities related to equity and health literacy practices within these systems
  • Knowledge of concepts, frameworks, and practices related to health literacy, public health, materials development, and equity and social justice
  • Knowledge of both systems/policy change and behavior change principles
  • Ability to successfully engage and work with individuals at all levels of understanding about equity and social justice concepts
  • Ability to perform comfortably in front of large and small groups using creative presentation and facilitation techniques that engage the audience
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups with varying opinions and backgrounds
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, collaboration, and presentation skills, including the effective use of visuals and graphics in communication
  • Ability to manage multiple and shifting priorities
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under the pressure of multiple priorities;
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite to include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Teams
  • Proficiency in Teams, Zoom or other instructional platforms to facilitate online in real time

Work Schedule
This full-time Career Service position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not overtime eligible. The work week is normally Monday through Friday with some evening and weekend work required to meet work demand related to Public Health services that operate 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
Work Location: 
Downtown Seattle: Chinook Building located at 401 Fifth Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104. Travel to Public Health sites across King County may be required.
The work associated with this position will be performed  through teleworking with reporting to office location/s and to meetings as needed. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required, including the wearing of masks in some situations.
