King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is looking for an IT Supervisor to join the Sheriff's Office Information Technology Computer Resource Unit under the direction of the Technology Services Division IT Manager. The incumbent in this position will be responsible for Supervising a team of 10+/- technical operations support staff, including Desktop Support Specialists and LAN Admins. This is an exciting opportunity to support the Sheriff's Office mission and values (leadership, integrity, service and teamwork).
WORK LOCATION AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: The current vacancy will be based out of the downtown Seattle King County Courthouse supervising staff who are based out of Sheriff’s Office Precincts throughout King County. Occasional travel to various KCSO offices within King County will be required, along with the opportunity for partial telecommuting. The incumbent must have the ability to conduct site visits to the King County Courthouse (downtown Seattle), or one of our Unincorporated Precincts (Burien, Sammamish or Maple Valley as well as visiting the Black River building in Renton) and Police Contract City partnerships (SeaTac, Shoreline, Newcastle, Woodinville, Kenmore, Covington, Metro Transit and Sound Transit), along with the 911 center in Renton.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and therefore is not eligible for overtime pay. At times, this position will be on-call to address operational outages or escalations.- Job Duties
- Supervise 24x7 Computer Resource Unit Desktop Support and LAN Administrator staff (who work on IT support help tickets to provide onsite steady-state operational support M-F) as well as rotating remote on-call support nights/weekends and holidays for Patrol Officers and 24x7 professional staffed units (such as Data, 911 and AFIS) from various King County Sheriff’s Office precincts; develop key performance measures, prioritize workload, maintain department SOPS (Standard Operating Procedures), evaluate job performance, conduct employee performance appraisals; and recommend hiring and disciplinary actions to appropriate management staff.
- Provide clear direction to off-site (remote) staff and vendors dedicated to the replacement and maintenance of laptops and desktops, Android smartphones, VPN, connectivity, multifactor authentication, police report writing systems, installation of and connection to the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and support of Office 365 Gov Cloud Enterprise tools, such as Outlook, Teams, One Drive as well as WSP Sector ticket writing/scanning tools, and Regional (AFIS) Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems.
- Assist the Technology Manager in the preparation, testing, implementation and maintenance of the department's technology roadmap to set priorities for the team, update IT and Security policies and procedures, develop overall staffing and workload plans, and recommend disaster recovery plans to ensure best practices are in place for high availability/uptimes.
- Assist in establishing core competency requirements for all unit positions and in the expansion of requirements-driven training and development plans for staff, including strengthen skills in vendor management.
- Participate in the development and administration of the work group’s information technology annual budget, monitor expenditures (such as quarterly laptop/desktop replacement orders), maintain accurate IT asset tracking records, make recommendations for budget adjustments and cost savings measures to Command Staff.
- Work closely with the IT Project Manager to plan, develop and implement new deployments of enterprise tools hosted by internal staff, King County partners or vendor hosted software as a service (SAAS). Review designs and determine how new or upgraded systems will be maintained and supported (internally or externally).
- Represent the Computer Resource Unit by participating as a member of cross functional, departmental or jurisdictional teams; participate on internal and external committees, such as partnering with King County IT or IT Supervisors (peers) at King County agencies such as the Jail or Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, as determined by management.
- Effectively establish and maintain positive relations with internal and external customers; regularly check in with Command Staff across all King County Sheriff’s Office Precincts and Contract City Chiefs to ensure customer service expectations are being met or exceeded.
- Incumbent must be able to articulate and defend project initiatives before governance and oversight bodies, including responding to and satisfying Audit requirements/findings.
- Participate in the county's leadership training programs and assess/manage the unit's cross training needs to ensure a consistent support experience across multiple locations.

Ability to perform the job duties of the position is required; including but not limited to the following:
- Bachelor's degree/certification or equivalent Information Technology work experience
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience in information systems techniques and principles including analysis, design, development, implementation, maintenance, documentation and training procedures and practices
- Knowledge of supervisory techniques and principles and the ability to supervise a multi-discipline, remote technical work team
- Proven strong analytical, planning and organizational skills
- Proven ability to build consensus and come to a resolution among a diverse group of individuals; Experience with building effective teams in diverse work environments while creating strong morale, instilling vision and purpose, and fostering open dialogue
- Interest in and ability to develop and lead direct reports, furthering people's career goals, providing challenging and growth oriented tasks and assignments, and effectively developing all levels of desktop/laptop IT support staff
- Knowledge of how to build relationships and treat all employees and customers equitably, with respect and dignity, as well as solving problems for the good of all; looking at the bigger picture, while managing one-off unique requests fairly and consistently according to standards and policies set forth by the General Orders Manual or the Unit’s Standard Operating Procedures as well as Governing Bodies and Oversight Committees, Auditors findings and requirements
- Ability to develop and nurture strong relationships, respecting established processes, and fostering an environment of mutual respect in alignment with bargaining agreements, including consulting OLR (Office of Labor Relations) and KCSO Command Staff’s expectations
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, experience in conflict resolution, problem-solving and negotiating potentially stressful situations.
- Two years IT supervisory or Lead experience
- Experience in a leadership role and/or supervision and performance management
- Supervisory training and/or certification
- Emotional Intelligence to foster a positive, encouraging, collaborative team environment
- Familiarity with State, Local or Federal Government practices
- Law enforcement (or similar) background
- Experience working with labor unions
