Position Summary
Public Health -- Seattle & King County is seeking a Language & Equity Program Manager (Project/Program Manager III "PPM III") to serve the Child Care Health Program's (CCHP) efforts to co-create community-informed equity and language-access initiatives that elevate the team's abilities to provide effective health consultation for children's well-being in early learning settings. The PPM will support the CCHP's work with educators who speak not only English but Spanish, Somali, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, and other linguistic and cultural communities; as well as with Best Starts for Kids (BSK), the King County Office of Equity and Social Justice (OESJ); and other partners to create, sustain, and advance the CCHP's goals.
The CCHP's work centers on elevating the health, behavior, nutrition, physical activity, learning, and other developmental opportunities for children primarily from birth to age 5 in out-of-home care. The CCHP consultants provide highly relationship-based, prevention-oriented services to educators in child care and early learning programs. With guidance and support from CCHP colleagues, linguistic and cultural early learning communities, BSK, OESJ, King County Information Technology (KCIT), and others, the PPM will cooperatively and independently discern what communications, materials, and supports educators need to enhance the health and safety outcomes of children in their care. The PPM will translate those needs into carefully planned processes for methods the CCHP will implement for its website materials and designs; supportive health documents for early learning programs; and other forms of communication, services, and supports (e.g., audios and videos, visual materials, methods of interaction, resources, and more) to help diverse educators have improved access to health information they can more readily implement for child well-being in early learning settings. Importantly, the CCHP uses equity, trauma-informed, and anti-racist practices to engage in its care in the community. We are seeking a PPM team member who is driven to collaborate on upending the status quo of individual and systemic bias, racism, and disproportional access to resources for healthy human development while advocating for justice for young children and the adults who care for them.
Background
The CCHP is embedded in the Community Health Services (CHS) Division of Public Health - Seattle & King County (PHSKC). As described on the Public Health website, CHS "works to protect and improve the health and well-being of all people in King County." It does so for residents furthest from justice through a host of anti-racist, equity-driven health care programs, including Access & Outreach (to health resources); Public Health and Dental Clinics; Health Care for the Homeless; Maternity Support Services; Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program; School-Based Health Clinics, and more. The CCHP is an interdisciplinary team of health professionals who provide health consultation to child care and early learning educators in their programs throughout the Seattle area to bolster their capacities, knowledge, and skills for the health, development, and well-being of the young children in educators' care. Consultations mostly take place in-person in early learning programs, and additionally the CCHP collaborates within the team and with government and community partners to assure high-quality, useful child health information, materials, and resources are readily available and accessible for those early learning educators.
Commitment To Equity and Social Justice
Named after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most influential civil rights leaders in our nation's history, King County is a vibrant international community with residents that represent countries from around the world. It is a region with increasing diversity that cherishes the traditions of many cultures.
The county government has a deep commitment to equity and social justice and advancing practices, strategies, and policies that promote fairness, justice, and opportunity for all - in our workplaces and our communities. With this commitment, King County has adopted a pro-equity agenda to advance regional change and ensure that residents from all communities are incorporated into our emergency planning and public outreach efforts.
We recognize that structural racism consists of principles and practices that cause and justify an inequitable distribution of rights, opportunities, and experiences across racial groups. Since declaring Racism is a Public Health Crisis in June 2020, King County and Public Health committed to being intentionally anti-racist and accountable to Black, Indigenous and People of Color communities.
