King County Metro Transit's Facilities Division has an exciting opportunity for a Line Material Worker I.
The Line Material Worker I operates equipment and works in and around our active electric trolley bus system. They stock trucks; operate platform line trucks, auger trucks, and other specialized equipment; assemble materials and structures for the Overhead Catenary System (OCS) special work; and, track time and materials in support of the installation and maintenance of our high-voltage electrical system.
This recruitment will immediately fill one (1) Career Service position, and may also be used to create an eligibility pool for future Career Service positions , as well as any fully-benefitted Term-Limited Temporary and/or Special Duty Assignment positions, valid up to 12 months or until exhausted and at the discretion of the hiring authority.
Interviews are anticipated to occur during the week of June 5 through June 9, 2023 , but dates are subject to change.

Necessary special requirements:
Valid Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Class B endorsement (or above), with an acceptable driving record. Candidates with a Class B CDL must obtain a Class A endorsement within six (6) months of hire.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires the ability to operate heavy trucks equipped with towers, reels, booms, augers, and other specialized equipment. The incumbent will be required to lift up to 50 pounds and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance. Work is performed outside in all weather conditions and requires exposure to traffic and high voltage wires. Successful candidates will be required to wear Arc Flash uniforms, category 2 daily and up to category 4 as needed. Metro provides the uniforms.

Selection Process

All current King County Metro Transit employees in the classification of Utility Line Worker who have completed six (6) months or more of service in the class will be invited to interview. Formal offers will be finalized after candidates have successfully completed any necessary pre-employment processes, such as drug and alcohol testing, background checks, DOT physicals, driving history review, reference checks, and/or internal record reviews.
Work Location and Schedule
These positions report to the King County Power Distribution headquarters, located at 2255 4th Avenue S, Seattle, WA 98134. Employees are dispatched from this location to multiple King County facilities located through the greater King County area.
These positions are full time, scheduled for 40 hours a week. These positions are usually scheduled 4 days per week, 10 hours per day, and may include day, swing, and overnight shifts. Emergency call-outs or schedule adjustments may occur. These positions are non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for overtime pay with supervisor approval. These positions are not eligible for telework/remote work.

Job Duties
Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. All employees are expected to model and apply our equity and social justice shared values, behaviors, and practices. As a Line Material Worker I, you will also:
- Operate tower trucks and pole hauling trucks and other line vehicles used in the transportation of line workers, tools, and equipment to work sites.
- Gather parts and materials from inventory. Equip trucks with tools, equipment, and materials used by line workers. Inspect tools and equipment to assure they are in good condition and working order. Report equipment failures to supervision for replacement or repair. Assemble parts and materials for OCS special work installation by field crews.
- Assist crew workers in trimming trees, shoveling dirt and gravel, and other tasks as required in setting poles, both wood and steel.
- Operate specialized equipment during line repair to assist in the installation and repair of High Voltage electrical equipment.
- Alert crew workers of potential hazards, such as high trucks that could hit tower deck or oncoming trolleys.
- Prepare daily reports including work location, material used, repair hours, and equipment used during installation or repair.
- Respond to emergency repair calls during non-working hours as necessary.
To be considered eligible for this role, applicants must possess these MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Six (6) months or more of current service within the Utility Line Worker Helper classification with King County Metro Transit.
- Experience in operating heavy trucks with manual shifts and power controls, such as: Line Truck, Digger Derrick, Forklifts, Bucket Trucks, and other associated equipment used in the construction and maintenance of high voltage electrical systems.
- Verifiable knowledge and ability to safely maneuver heavy trucks in congested areas.
- Ability to work as part of a crew or independently, with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of OCS parts and materials.
- Knowledge of proper OCS special work requirements and experience in assembly and installation preparation for completed assemblies.
- Ability to assemble Trolley Overhead specialized switches and crossovers without supervision.
- Knowledge of best practices and work methods used during the construction and maintenance of high voltage systems.
- Must have good working knowledge of OSHA and WAC, relating to high-voltage electrical equipment (1910.269/WAC 296-45).
- Ability to demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance.
- Demonstrated ability to drive in a safe and responsible manner.
- Possession of a Flagger Certification, First Aid Certification, and CPR Certification.
- Related experience and present evidence of familiarity with associated tools and equipment used in the installation and maintenance of high voltage systems.
- Familiarity with installation and maintenance work methods used in installing and maintaining a high voltage electrical equipment in a Trolley Overhead system.
- Current CDL with Tanker endorsement.
