Metal Fabricator - Lead (Working Title: Lead Welder)
- Summary
The Solid Waste Division of King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks is looking for a Metal Fabricator (Welder) Lead in their Operations Section who will perform metal fabricator work and primarily lead over other Metal Fabricators. In addition, will be alternate shop lead for coordinating and assigning work to other staff members within the shop. Lead functions include identifying, scheduling, training, coordinating, planning, assigning, overseeing and evaluating the work of other crew members and perform administrative duties, and performing a wide variety of skilled welding and metal fabrication work.

WORK LOCATION: Primary work location is Cedar Hills Regional Landfill located at 16645 228th Ave SE, Maple Valley, WA 98038.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position works a 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible with Supervisor approval.
OPERATIONS SECTION PROFILE: The operations section of the Solid Waste Division operates a solid waste transfer and disposal system for residents and businesses in King County (except for Milton and Seattle). The operations section is responsible for the transfer facilities, transportation, maintenance shop (maintaining the division's heavy equipment, vehicles and facilities), landfill operations, landfill gas and wastewater. Commercial garbage collection companies and self-haulers (business and residential) bring solid waste to the transfer facilities, where it is located into large transfer trailers and hauled to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill for disposal. At the landfill, a network of environmental controls ensures the by-products of the decomposing waste are captured and managed.EXAMPLE OF JOB DUTIES:
• Identify scope of work and assign to metal fabricator crew members.
• Provide direction and guidance to metal fabricator crew members.
• Establish procedures and implement training programs.
• Calculate labor, material and equipment charges for various projects.
• Establish and maintain repair and maintenance records.
• Respond to trouble calls, customer complaints, equipment failures and work requests.
• Plan, design, construct and coordinate smaller construction projects.
• Implement repairs on Solid Waste facilities and equipment to include Transfer Stations, bulldozers, compactors, scrapers and related equipment.
• Fabricate parts to replace or improve Solid Waste structures or equipment.
• Provide support services to other job classifications, primarily Auto Machinists.
• Interpret blue prints, sketches and other instructions.
• Monitor supplies and re-order as necessary.
• Perform disassembly and assembly of equipment for access to weld areas.
• Design special jigs and fixtures.
• Design, lay out, assemble and weld complex repairs and specialized modifications.
• Repair defective or damaged metal parts. Work with light, heavy-gauge and hardened metals.
• Maintaining information to a windows based computer program.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
• Five (5) years of providing leadership, planning, coordinating work of, providing work direction of others, and oversight experience in the performance of metal fabrication work.
• Three (3) years of experience in using CCG Faster or other computerized maintenance scheduling system.
• Demonstrated knowledge with using computer and Microsoft Suite applications (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
• Skill in training employees in relevant technical areas.
• Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Effective business communications (oral and written).
• Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Skill in estimating materials and labor needed to complete work.
• Excellent problem solving skills.
• Strong customer service skills.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Possession of a valid Washington State Driver's License.
• Washington State Journeyman Welder certification
• Successful candidate will be required to pass a physical examination.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENT:
The position requires physical labor including, but not limited to, standing, balancing, bending neck, kneeling, squatting, reaching, pushing and pulling. The ability to lift, carry, move, or handle up to 50 pounds. The candidate must have the ability to work including, but not limited to, inside/outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, inclement weather while on uneven slopes, surfaces, grades and terrain and other adverse conditions such as fumes, toxic chemicals, odor, noise, dust and moving machinery.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon satisfactory physical examination, supervisory level reference checks and verification of a valid Washington State Driver's License.
