Metro Transit Interns or Veteran Fellows in the Mobility Division
- Summary
King County Metro Transit is currently hiring four undergraduate and/or graduate student interns or veteran fellows to work within Metro's Research and Innovation group which is part of the Mobility Division. One intern or fellow will be hired to work within each of the following programs: the Innovative Mobility Program (graduate student or veteran), the Bike & Walk Program (graduate student or veteran), the Parking and Mobility Hubs Program (graduate student or veteran) and the Research & Evaluation program (undergraduate or graduate student or veteran). Each internship/fellowship opportunity is described in more detail later in this announcement. Ideal start time for interns or fellows to start is June 2020 to work full time hours over the summer and part time hours during the academic year. Metro is open to interns or fellows starting before June if schedules align for the intern or fellow and program. Interested full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate students and qualified veterans are encouraged to apply.

King County Metro Transit is a regional and national leader in getting people to work quickly, reducing commuter stress, addressing climate change and improving urban air quality through sustainable transportation strategies, and by providing comfortable, effective and equitable regional mobility services for commuters, residents, and visitors of King County, Washington.
Who May Apply
These internships/fellowships are open ONLY to:- Students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate college program depending on the position. Students must be full-time or part-time students during the entire internship, with the exception of the summer.
- U.S Military Veterans, Reservists or members of the National Guard. Those who left the military within the last five years and reside within King County will be given preference.
Work Schedule
Student applicants should expect to work up to 20 hours/week during the school year; up to 40 hours/week during the summer; non-student applicants (Veterans) should expect to work up to 40 hours/week. Work will generally be carried out during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm). Interns/fellows may work with their supervisors to accommodate class schedules or other conflicts.
Benefits
Interns/Veteran Fellows receive a free ORCA transit fare pass for unlimited rides on King County Metro, Pierce Transit, Kitsap Transit, Kitsap Fast Ferries, Community Transit, Everett Transit, Sound Transit and King County Water Taxi, Seattle Streetcar and Seattle Monorail. Additionally, Interns/Veteran Fellows will accrue .025 hours of paid sick leave for each hour in pay status. Veteran Fellows who work 30 or more hours/week for the duration of their assignment will also be offered medical benefits under the Affordable Health Care Act. Interns/Veteran fellows are not eligible for retirement, holiday and vacation pay.
Specific Salary Ranges:- Undergraduate Interns: $17.5208 - $22.2087 per hour
- Graduate Interns: $19.7266 – $25.0045 per hour.
- Vets 4 HIRE Veteran Fellows will be compensated at a range of $17.5208 - $31.6969 depending on military rank and education level.
- Veteran Fellow I - $17.5208 – $22.2087 per hour - High School graduate; or pursuing BA; or enlisted grade E4 or lower
- Veteran Fellow II - $19.7266 - $25.0045 per hour - Possess BA; or pursuing Masters; or enlisted grade E5 or higher
- Veteran Fellow III - $25.0061 - $31.6969 - Completed Masters or Officer rank
Each student intern or veteran fellowship assignment will involve a set of customized learning objectives and deliverables that provide hands-on experience assisting with and accomplishing specific work tasks or projects within each work group.
JOB DUTIES, EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS FOR EACH PROGRAM
INNOVATIVE MOBILITY PROGRAM STUDENT INTERNSHIP/VETERAN FELLOWSHIP
Open to graduate students and veterans
Duration: June 2020 to June 2021
Standard Hours Per Week: up to 40 hours/week for non-students; up to 40 hours/week for students during the summer vacation and up to 20 hours/week maximum during the school year for students.
Metro's Innovative Mobility Program develops new business models, service concepts, and analysis aimed at leveraging emerging mobility services and integration technologies to improve mobility, equity, and sustainability in King County. Our core activities include:- Service Pilots: Planning, implementation and operational management of service pilots that test innovative mobility solutions and more efficient delivery methods of existing services.
- Integration Frameworks: Building policy, data management, and other support frameworks to advance mobility solutions that integrate transit with complementary mobility services.
- Analysis and Education: Drawing out and disseminating key lessons learned and strategic recommendations based on the analysis of our pilots, research projects, and industry trends.
- Subject Matter Expertise: Offering subject matter expertise and collaborative leadership on the innovative mobility space to other groups at Metro and regional stakeholders.
- Inequality in access to personal mobility and disproportionate disadvantages for historically underserved priority populations
- The climate crisis and the need to quickly and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.
- Limited mobility options and first/last mile challenges in mid-to-low density areas that are less served by transit.
- Disjointed and fragmented access to mobility options and information, and other barriers to flexible multi-modal travel.
- Personal automobile dependency, and barriers to car-free and car-lite lifestyles.
- Externalities and issues emerging from new mobility technologies and autonomous vehicles surrounding safety, labor rights, data security, and privacy.
- Develop first-hand practical knowledge of how Metro aims to leverage new mobility services and technologies to improve mobility in King County
- Develop applied data analysis and research skills toward program design and policy development
- Gain a good understanding of inter-agency partnership work, through interaction with consultants, staff at non-profit agencies and jurisdictions; and

METRO PARKING & MOBILITY HUBS PROGRAM STUDENT INTERNSHIP/VETERAN FELLOWSHIP

Metro's Parking & Mobility Hubs Program is one of three focus areas within Metro's Connecting to Transit team. The parking program is central to realizing Metro's long-range vision for easy, abundant first and last mile access to transit for travelers throughout King County. The Parking & Mobility Hubs Program focuses on managing Metro's existing parking, developing strategies to transition traditional park and ride lots into multi modal mobility hubs, and implementing innovative approaches to deliver additional parking and access capacity now and in the future.
The Parking & Mobility Hubs Program is seeking to fill one student intern or veteran fellowship position. The selected candidate should expect to learn about the role of land use and parking in supporting transit-oriented communities, about Metro's evolution from a transit agency to a mobility agency, and about how the role of park and ride lots is changing now and in the future.
Specific emphases includes:- Data collection, analysis, reporting and visualization.
- Public outreach principles, including developing inclusive outreach strategies and materials, engaging with transit customers and other stakeholders, and managing communications with diverse audiences.
- Procurement and oversight of vendors and technical consultants.
- Development of technical reports, policy recommendations and other written documents
- General activities of the parking program and other Connecting to Transit work groups, including innovative mobility and the bike/walk program.

Metro's Bike and Walk Program is one of three programs within Metro's Connecting to Transit (C2T) team. The Bike and Walk Program provides strategic direction and implementation for Metro's active transportation connections to transit service. The program oversees the implementation of secure bike parking (e.g. on-demand bike lockers), helps fund safe routes to transit with cities (e.g. sidewalk, intersection and bike improvements), supports bike racks on buses, supports bike share and micro mobility as a first/last mile connection to transit, and supports outreach, education and encouragement for active transportation.
The Bike and Walk Program is seeking to fill one student intern or veteran fellowship position. The person selected for this position should expect to learn and practice:- The role of active transportation to connect to transit in different land use settings and to meet the needs of diverse travelers;
- Transportation demand management strategies to influence travel choice;
- Public transit agency planning, policy analysis, project/program development and implementation;
- The capital and operational needs to plan, implement, manage and analyze bike and walk program elements in the context of a transit agency.
- Principles, practices, design and resources for active transportation and multi-modal integration
- Data collection, analysis, reporting and visualization for decision-making
- Managing capital and operating programs and projects
- Coordination with internal and external professionals to accomplish objectives
- Public outreach principles, including inclusive outreach strategies and materials, engaging with transit customers and other stakeholders, and managing communications with diverse audiences
- Relationships between active transportation, public health, the built environment and place-making

Metro's Research and Evaluation program is responsible for conducting market and customer research to help Metro develop and evaluate policies, programs, products and services. Research and Evaluation is part of the Research and Innovation group.
The Research and Evaluation Program is seeking to fill one student intern or veteran fellowship position. The person selected for this position should expect to:- Develop first-hand practical knowledge of how Metro aims to leverage new mobility services and technologies to improve mobility in King County
- Apply academic learnings in the design of data collection methods and tools
- Develop applied data analysis and research skills toward service improvements, product and program design and policy development
- Gain a good understanding of inter-agency partnership work, through interaction with consultants and other external partners
- Gain understanding of team-based work, policy/data analysis and presentation development and delivery.
- Passion and interest in exploring a career in transportation and market/customer research
- At least a junior or senior undergraduate college student OR Veteran
- Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with a diverse group of individuals from a variety of different positions and backgrounds
- Work or academic experience in transportation research or planning
- Strong analytical skills, including survey design and development, data collection, data entry, data analysis, and policy analysis
- Strong writing and editing skills – reports and presentations
- Strong computer skills (Excel, Word, design software and GIS, Power BI, SPSS, SurveyMonkey, PowerPoint)
