The King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is seeking a Mental Health Professional (MHP) Program Coordinator (PPM III) support the design and implementation of a new KCSO MHP Co-Responder Program. This program will provide KCSO deputies with a deployable mental health professional for emergent and non-emergent calls of service that have a component of behavioral health, social services, and/or substance abuse. The MHP Program Administrator will provide expertise as a subject matter expert, mental health professional and serve as an integral member of the design and implementation team.

The KCSO MHP Therapeutic Response Unit (TRU) resides in KCSO's Community Programs and Services Division. The Co-Responding MHP will report to the Co-Response Program Manager (CRPM). TRU has a critical role in contributing to KCSO's commitment to community engagement and collaboration. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who share KCSO's values and mission.

Job Duties

  • Participate in supervision and clinical supervision with TRU Program Manager.
  • Attend trainings, synthesizing information, and demonstrate best practices in co-response.
  • Be available as a professional mental health resource for precincts.
  • Coordinate services for community contacts that are in need of social service referrals for care and recovery.
  • Document community engagement and referrals for data gathering and analysis.
  • Complete training for Crisis Intervention at the Criminal Justice Training Commission 40 HR Level.
  • Act as a liaison for individuals in crisis and their respective social services needs in the capacity of modified case management.
  • Provide de-escalation and support when safe and feasible as directed by a KCSO deputy during calls for service.
  • Maintain appropriate records, documentation, and interagency communications as they relate to co-response contacts and service.
  • Willingness to work in partnership with a KCSO deputy and in various environments during calls for services.
  • Complete a comprehensive regional assessment of mental and behavioral health services and provide recommendations for the future needs of the program.
  • Provide technical knowledge to the program manager.
  • Assist with drafting policy and procedures for the MHP program.
  • Attend trainings, synthesizing information and best practices to incorporate into policies and procedures.
  • Be available as a professional mental health resource for precincts.
  • May deploy to calls of service as an MHP, and coordinate resources for individuals in crisis.
  • Develop and deliver trainings, and roll out MHP Co-Responder toolkit.
  • Lead the team of field MHPs and provide clinical supervision as needed. Help develop best practices for fieldwork.
  • Assist with public information for the program. Handle politically sensitive citizen calls. Work with community coalitions on behalf of program.
  • Make staff hiring recommendations, to include interviewing potential candidates.
  • Assist with program analysis, make technical recommendations for changing scope of study to program manager.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and schedule work done by MHP teams. Resolve team or unit disputes. Provide leadership, evaluation, and feedback to MHPs.
  • Maintain strict ethical and professional boundaries in the course of working as a co-responding MHP with KCSO.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills



To be considered for this position, applicants must have a minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience providing integrated behavioral health services. Additional requirements include:
  • Must be able to meet and maintain the definition of a Mental Health Professional as defined in WAC 246-341-0515, by date of employment.
  • Must maintain a Washington State Department of Health credential that satisfies the definition of MHP in good standing.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a multi-faceted program.
  • Experienced in the access, exchange, release, and storage of information - HIPAA and PPI.
  • Skilled in gathering data for program evaluation.
  • Skilled in problem solving, working in multi-systems, and service coordination.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain the definition of a Mental Heal Professional as defined in WAC 246-341-0515, by date of employment.
  • Experience developing and delivering trainings.
  • Experience as a staff supervisor or lead.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a multi-faceted program.
  • Experienced in the access, exchange, release, and storage of information - HIPAA and PPI.
  • Ability to work at a policy and planning level with service systems at the local or regional level.
  • Skilled in research methods.
  • Skilled in gathering and analyzing data for program evaluation.
  • Skilled in problem solving, budget analysis and policy analysis.
  • Ability to apply quantitative and qualitative analytical methods.
  • Experience in project development and implementation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to stand and walk for long durations (hours) of time (Primarily with Sound and Metro-but other places as well)
  • Ability to work in inclement weather, hot, cold, rain for long durations (hours) of time
  • Ability to navigate, climb and descend several flights of stairs for emergencies in building when elevators are unavailable or for safety reasons
  • Ability to bend, twist, sit, stand, and be on knees while responding to calls for service (example, aiding in CPR and use of an AED on the ground)
  • Ability to navigate small spaces like cramped apartments, hoarded homes, confined spaces such as the passenger seat of patrol cars with computer stands and other equipment that is present
  • Ability to run or jog in sort durations/distances, should safety needs arise
  • Ability to exit and enter a patrol vehicle in emergency or evacuation situations and to ride in a patrol vehicle between 30-40 hours a week
  • Ability to lift and carry 30-50 lbs for bursts of time. Ex-gear such as body armor, small children if we are assisting CPS or in other crisis situations
  • Ability to participate in the full range of care under fire and/or stop the bleed training and implementation of training in the field
  • Ability to navigate through rough and uneven terrain such as brambles, the woods, inclines, hills, and be able to navigate over short fences, retaining walls under 3-4 feet tall (this happens when going to encampments or down paths in parks or larger properties)

WORK SCHEDULE This position is based on 40 hours (weekdays, approximately 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM). Hours may vary based on business need, and may include some occasional early morning, evening, and weekend hours. This position is based at the King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle but may require travel to worksites throughout King County. Some hybrid in-person/remote work may be available.
