NextGen Climate Intern - 2023
- Summary
The King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks (DNRP) seeks NextGen Climate Interns. Participants in this program will contribute to shaping their professional development in climate-associated career fields. Project-based interns will complete policy and implementation driven assignments supporting the County's Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP), integrating climate change into all county operations, and working with King County cities, partners, communities, and residents. The SCAP outlines King County's priorities and commitments for climate action to residents and partners. These internships will be yearlong and will provide experience in the practical application of coursework and local government action in responding to climate change in a large-scale urban infrastructure system. Participants will have the opportunity to work on individual projects and a larger group project to contributing to the implementation of the NextGen Climate strategic plan.
Each NextGen intern will work with County Staff helping to implement a priority action tied to King County Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP). Past projects have included arranging a climate justice learning series, developing performance measurement metrics for climate preparedness initiatives and contributing to continuous improvement planning around lowering the county’s GHG emissions. All projects are vital components of ensuring the county equitably implements its strategic climate action plan.
We work in a fast pace but provide interns with the support they need to keep up with the demands of the position while also allowing for significant professional development and peer/ mentor support.

Core Work Duties:
- Lead on an assigned individual project related to implementing a priority action associated with King County Strategic Climate Action Plan utilizing skills in project management, communications and research.
- Regularly attend climate staff team meetings and NextGen Climate intern team meetings while positively and constructively contributing to the team’s work.
- Develop a portfolio detailing the results of the individual project and sharing formative skills building experiences during the internship.
- Attend regular professional development sessions and take an active role in shaping cohort and individual professional development opportunities.
- Assist with countywide strategic initiatives related to climate work as directed.

Working Conditions:
Telecommuting and King Street Center
The work associated with this position will be performed predominantly by telecommuting, with occasional onsite work and meetings, as influenced by business needs. Employee will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer. King County is doing its part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and remains committed to reducing our carbon footprint.

Work Location: Primarily teleworking and the King Street Center 201 S. Jackson St., Seattle WA 98104. There will be an expectation to travel to various worksites throughout King and South Snohomish County as needed for your work
Work Schedule: This position is non-exempt from the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. This part-time position works a 20-hour work week, Monday through Friday.
