Park District Maintenance Coordinator - Special Duty Assignment

The Parks Operations Section is filling a Special Duty opportunity for a Park District Maintenance Coordinator as a temporary backfill for the Five Mile District Crew. The Park District Maintenance Coordinator position oversees and supports the work program of an assigned maintenance crew. Responsibilities include developing work plans, scheduling and assigning work, monitoring budget expenditures, completing work orders, ordering equipment and supplies, resolving complaints, performing maintenance and repair work, and overseeing and evaluating the work of subordinates at assigned parks, public grounds and/or facilities.

Duration: The special duty opportunity is expected to last 6 months.
Who is Eligible: King County Parks Division Career Service Employees only.
Work Location: This position works at the Five Mile District located at 36429 44th Ave S, auburn WA 98001.
Work Schedule: This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. This full-time position works a 40-hour work week.- Job Duties
- Oversee and work with/lead assigned maintenance staff and apply performance and safety standards. Evaluate work performance; identify need for performance improvement.
- Develop, schedule, monitor and evaluate work plans and programs. Initiate personnel actions involving Parks Specialists; recommend personnel action on other positions.
- Provide input for budget planning; monitor expenditures for assigned work unit.
- Provide excellent customer service to all park and trail users. Respond to public inquiries; investigate and resolve complaints. Promote good relationships with the public and user groups.
- Order supplies, materials, services, equipment and machinery. Research, request and complete purchase orders, work requests and other forms.
- Coordinate activities with other sections or agencies. Attend and facilitate meetings.
- Coordinate procurement of contract services, materials and lease equipment. Coordinate and inspect activities of external contractors.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs while operating trucks, tractors, riding mowers, power equipment and tools.
- Coordinate or apply herbicides; maintain appropriate records in accordance with established policy and procedure. Establish and maintain inventory of trees and plants.
- Monitor natural resource lands for habitat and wildlife protection.
- Coordinate the construction, renovation and repairs of back country trails, trail structures and bridges.
- Initiate and coordinate appropriate permit applications.
- Represent Parks and Recreation Division as first contact to businesses, to develop community partnerships, alliances, and sponsorships, involving park lands, maintenance and physical site improvements.
- Plan, direct and perform the maintenance and repair of turf and landscaped areas, athletic fields, building facilities, trails, or greenhouse and nursery.
- Identify and coordinate the removal, repair and/or elimination of known hazards on parks grounds and facilities.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Required Qualifications:
- At least four years of full-time park maintenance work experience or similar general maintenance experience requiring independent responsibility for completion of work assignments. The candidate will also have:
- Knowledge of and experience in parks maintenance operations and procedures including trail maintenance and construction, landscaping and grounds-keeping, natural resource restoration practices, and facilities maintenance.
- Basic knowledge of building craft and mechanical trades.
- Basic mathematics skills.
- Proven ability to apply exceptional customer service skills both orally and in writing, including the ability to provide professional and courteous service to the public and the ability to handle difficult situations in an effective and positive manner on a daily basis.
- Demonstrated ability in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and communications with supervisors, parks staff and the public.
- Experience in leading, directing and training others is highly desirable.
- Makes good and timely decisions that keep the organization moving forward.
- Plans and prioritizes work to meet commitments aligned with organizational goals.
- Ensures Accountability by holding self and others accountable to meet commitments.
- Collaborates by building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives.
- Values Differences and recognizes what different perspectives and cultures bring to an organization.
- A valid driver's license at the time of appointment required.
- Work includes indoor and outdoor settings. May be exposed to drafts, pollens, inclement weather, and uneven surfaces.
- This position involves heavy physical labor and use of power tools and equipment.
- Requires ability to perform duties including bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, twisting and repetitively lifting 50 lbs.
