The Light Rail Vehicle Maintenance section has an outstanding opportunity for a Rail Service Worker – Lead! This position is a working member of a team, assigned with cleaning the interior and exterior of Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs). Rail Service Workers are responsible for moving vehicles in the yard as needed, maintaining shop facilities and vehicles, and cleaning and servicing shop equipment. Additional responsibilities of the Rail Service Worker - Lead include identifying, scheduling, coordinating, planning, assigning, overseeing, and evaluating the work of other Rail Service Workers, vendors or contractors. Lead responsibilities also involve assigning overtime, approving leave, training personnel and performing administrative duties for cleaning and repairs associated with Streetcars, Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) and Non-Revenue Vehicles (NRVs).
Link Light Rail, operated by King County Metro Transit, is responsible for providing rail service to a 20.4 mile light rail line from University of Washington to Angle Lake Station. Currently Link Light Rail has 90 railcars and 90 various other supporting vehicles.
This recruitment will be used to fill one current career service position in the LINK Light Rail Vehicle Maintenance section and may be used to generate a pool for similar Career Service, Term Limited (TLT) and Special Duty Assignment (SDA) openings in this division. The pool will be valid for six months upon creation and may be extended at the discretion of the hiring authority.
This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for these positions are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substance testing program protocols.- Job Duties

As the Rail Service Worker Lead, you will perform the following duties:
Day Shift Duties:
- Monitor service compliance, run various data reports, edit and manage NRV maintenance calendar, schedule service appointments, and provide recommendations for maintenance of Non-Revenue Vehicles (NRVs).
- Make basic repairs to NRVs such as replacing batteries, wipers, light bulbs, and tires.
- Communicate with contractors, Sound Transit, Streetcar or Rail Chiefs/Superintendents about Non-Revenue Vehicles (NRVs).
- Operate and maintain shop equipment and tools; prepare time and material cost estimates; maintain parts inventory and automated inventory records; maintain shop areas for cleanliness and safety.
- Create requisitions within the ST and KCM systems to procure necessary parts and supplies to maintain fleet of Non-Revenue Vehicles (NRVs).
- Create NRV work orders to track and record necessary maintenance and repair work on Non-Revenue Vehicle (NRV) fleet.
- Provide direction and leadership to Day Shift RSW group.
- Create Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) work orders for fleet detail and other necessary tasks.
- Ensure shop equipment, supplies and special tools for RSW detail work is properly maintained and in good working order.
- Create new procedures and SOPs/SMPs for updating or developing new cleaning or repair tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Graveyard Shift Duties:
- Ensure Rail vehicles are available for scheduled maintenance, cleaning and repairs based on written and online forecasting sources with minimal or no direction from the Vehicle Maintenance Chief.
- Assign Rail vehicles for revenue service requirements, maximizing fleet availability and utilizing yard setup efficiently.
- Conduct inventory of Rail vehicle storage yards, extract and input data to correct automated train location software, preventative maintenance forecasting tools and meter readings.
- Ensure proper assignment of LRVs with special vehicle equipment such as automated passenger counts, vehicle wraps and test vehicles.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
We are looking for someone who has:
- Knowledge of Rail vehicle inventory practices and Rail vehicle maintenance procedures.
- Knowledge of basic janitorial techniques.
- Knowledge of automotive servicing techniques.
- Skill in verbal and written communication.

- Skill in accurately performing numeric calculations and perform record keeping tasks.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining schedules and deadlines.

- Demonstrated proficiency with business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, Asset Works, or similar maintenance management information systems.

Necessary Special Requirements
- Must have at least two years working within the Rail Service Worker classification (per Local 587 contract) and previous professional cleaning experience and/or automotive maintenance or equipment servicing experience.
- OR any combination of education and experience that clearly demonstrates the ability to perform the job duties of the position.
Working Environment
- Must be able to work from high places on mechanical lift devices, support structures, and poles.
- Must work around yard rail switches and high voltage equipment; indoors, outdoors, and in inclement weather.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

Who May Apply
This position is open to current qualified Local 587 King County Rail Service Workers. This is the second level in a two-level classification within Rail Vehicle Maintenance. Work involves providing technical assistance and lead direction to employees in the Vehicle Maintenance classifications. This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) day shift Lead position and may be used to generate a pool for future vacancies.
Work Schedule
King County LINK Light Rail operates three shifts - day, swing, and graveyard - seven days a week. Employees will work a 40-hour per week schedule with two consecutive days off, currently Saturday and Sunday. Day Shift responsibilities will focus on repairs to NRVs, while Graveyard shift will coordinate the board and LRV pull in/pull out. Work schedules are based on a seniority "pick" system, which occurs one time per year. Swing and graveyard shift employees receive a shift differential. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift, including any combination of days off, weekends, and holidays. Work shift is based on a seniority pick-process. Positions to be filled by this recruitment are non-exempt and therefore eligible for overtime pay.
