Rail: Transit Chief Vehicle Maintenance
- Summary
Metro is seeking to fill a Transit Chief position supervising the daily operation of the Vehicle Maintenance Department within the Rail Division. **This position is open to all King County employees only**.
As a chief, you will provide immediate, daily management of vehicle maintenance for Rail operations, supervising the work, and managing the performance of vehicle maintenance staff. Time is spent working in a high voltage maintenance shop environment. You may work at heights from mechanical lift devices and structures for inspection and training purposes. This position requires the use of everyday office equipment and supplies, and the use of typical vehicle maintenance tools and equipment as well as stooping and bending motions as necessary to demonstrate procedures or to inspect vehicles.
This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for this position will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.- Job Duties

- Plan, schedule, assign work and supervises the maintenance and repair of light rail vehicles, related equipment and/or facilities
- Assists in supervising and coordinating the daily activities of a rail car maintenance and repair facility
- Supervises, counsels and disciplines subordinate personnel and represent Light Rail at disciplinary hearings as needed
- Determines work priorities and establishes shift schedules
- Directs the servicing and cleaning of rail cars
- Coordinates car assignments, pull-in, pull-out and exchanges
- Monitors usage of tools and equipment
- Ensures compliance with safety regulations, performs safety training, and supervises safe work practices; investigates industrial injuries
- Prepares and monitors preventative maintenance programs
- Prepares and monitors overhaul programs
- Observes and reports on the condition of transit property and rail vehicles; assures compliance with provisions of equipment warranties
- Supervises the re-railing and loading of equipment
- Operates company assigned vehicles including hy-rail and aerial lift devices
- Makes estimates of labor, time, costs, and materials
- Serves as a department representative in interaction with other LINK LR departments and outside agencies
- Prepares written reports, documents defects and repairs on inspection forms, work orders, or specialized software; performs related data input and retrieval
- Operates Light Rail vehicles, as needed

- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
We are looking for candidates who have:
- Experience as a Lead Electro-Mechanic in Rail Vehicle Maintenance
- Strong people leader skills
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work and partnership of Metro and Sound Transit
- Skilled in communicating with clarity and thoroughness to optimize audience understanding
- Experience in taking initiative and ability to manages multiple activities while paying attention to detail.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
- At least 6 months of experience as Lead Electro-Mechanic in Rail Vehicle Maintenance
- Working knowledge of principles of supervision, scheduling, motivation, and discipline
- Working knowledge of industrial and general safety rules and regulations as applied to a maintenance shop, hazardous materials handling, storage and disposal
- Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations governing the maintenance of rail vehicles (FRA, AAR, FTA, and APTA)
- Knowledge of laws, ordinances, and regulations governing the activities of employees working in a high voltage environment, including maintenance safety and accident prevention
- Working knowledge of theory, operation, and repair of systems similar to those found on light rail vehicles, electrical components, shop equipment, air conditioning, heating, pneumatics, hydraulics, and other related light rail vehicle, systems
- Knowledge of principles of quality control and quality assurance
- Knowledge of standard maintenance principles including preventative maintenance
- Knowledge of principles of electricity, electronics, and digital circuits
- Able to stay current with new rail technologies
- Able to operate common office equipment, including personal computers and common software applications
- Ability to plan and schedule the work of a maintenance shop for optimum production
- Able to understand, interpret and apply rules, regulations, union contract provisions and policies and procedures
- Ability to read and understand drawings and schematics
- Ability to acquire a Light Rail Yard Operator card and any other required licenses

Work Schedule
This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and therefore, not eligible for overtime pay. Base hours are 40 hours/week and may be adjusted to include night, additional weekend and holiday hours. May be required to work extended and/or flexible work hours to respond to service needs. This is an on-call, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week position.
