Job Description:
Correctional nursing involves treating incarcerated patients. These nurses operate their practice within a secured facility and perform many of the same tasks as nursing professionals who work in traditional medical settings. They strive to provide compassionate health care through assessing, diagnosing and treating a variety of medical conditions. Correctional nurses have more autonomy than other nursing specialists since the work environment is compact which encourages the RN to hone their assessment skills in a variety of ways.
- Job Duties
Within Seattle & King County Corrections our nurses are assigned to a variety of tasks that are post based and begins with maintaining proper safety procedures through established protocols that work in concert with other disciplines as well as with Correction Officers. Their duties include properly monitoring medical supplies, like needles and medication. In order to maximize overall safety, correctional nurses learn to limit the use of potentially dangerous materials. Aside from an emphasis on the safety of the environment, work of correctional nurses mirrors that of other RNs. They carefully monitor patients' progress and responses to treatments, administer medication and maintain the clinics. Correctional nurses also properly document patient medical histories and respond to medical crisis as needed.
Because of our commitment to best practices and work surrounding the integration of trauma-informed care principles we provide orientation and support to meet you where you're at as we understand that no two people will learn in the same way and at the same pace. Most often new nurses are able to orient within 3-6 months.
During orientation, you can expect to learn through a variety of modalities that are similar to the clinical experiences with more in depth hands-on care. The orientation is structured and would include additional support from preceptors and Nurse Leaders.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Qualifications:
- Less than 12 months of nursing experience
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
- Current Washington State RN Licensure
- Current BLS/CPR Certification for Healthcare Providers
- Washington State Drivers' License or the ability to provide transportation to work location
- Must be willing to work night shift
Desired Qualifications:- Motivated RNs that desire to take a nursing leadership role in an ambulatory care practice
- RNs that demonstrate a strong work ethic
- Outstanding References from employers and/or faculty
- Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team to achieve group outcomes

Location and Hours: At this time, all Career Service (permanent) positions must be willing to work night shift (2215-0615). Both King County Correctional Facility, Seattle, WA and Maleng Regional Justice Center, Kent, WA are 24/7 operations and reserves the right to make changes to any schedule based on urgent operational needs.
