Summary
The Central Employee Services Division (CESD) within the Department of Human Resources (DHR) seeks a seasoned Safety Manager who will play a key role in the day-to-day operations of safety programs.
The Safety Manager will oversee and manage safety programs that enhance and promote a safety-oriented workplace culture while also ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws. Our safety programs include ergonomic evaluations to reduce repetitive motion injuries; occupational safety programs such as workplace sampling (noise, air quality), hearing conservation, and pre-employment physicals; and training for employees in life-saving practices such as first-aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use, defensive driving, forklift safety. The Safety Manager will analyze, design, develop, and implement safety and health objectives and programs while also providing daily supervision of the safety team.
As a member of CESD's leadership team, this role involves daily interaction with senior-level management and multiple business units. This role requires a self-starter with strong supervisory skills, a keen attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and solid experience developing performance metrics.

This position is not represented by a collective bargaining agreement and is classified as Safety and Claims Manager; class code 2335100.

Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. - Manage and oversee the daily administration of safety and accident prevention programs through high-level project planning and goal setting with the safety team that include ergonomic evaluations to reduce repetitive motion injuries; occupational safety programs such as workplace sampling (noise, air quality), hearing conservation, and pre-employment physicals; and training for employees in life-saving practices such as first-aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use, defensive driving, forklift safety. Ensure that technical and legal requirements are met.
- Provide supervision, program direction, and technical support for an expert safety team, inclusive of certified industrial hygienists, safety trainers, and a safety administrator.
- Review, analyze, and interpret legislation and other laws and regulations that affect safety programs. Evaluate for potential impacts on services, program goals, and objectives.
- Utilize engagement tools such as surveys, reports, and data to assess and benchmark the current safety culture across King County departments.
- Conceptualize, research, develop, and implement strategies, systems, standards, and plans. Use continuous improvement techniques such as LEAN to accomplish these initiatives.
- Determine safety performance standards and measures to include a continual review of the program for effectiveness, outcomes, and efficiencies.
- Ensure safety programs and trainings are designed and delivered using an equity and social justice strategy.
- Provide guidance to safety team on processing, investigating, and/or responding to worker's compensation claims.
- Facilitate meetings with various partners including supervisors, managers, County leaders, and human resource professionals to obtain input, feedback, and ideas to enhance and/or further refine the delivery of safety programs.
- Ensure that the delivery of safety and accident prevention programs across the County are consistent and in compliance with state, federal, and national standards, which includes ensuring the certifications of the team members are maintained.
- Lead and develop safety staff to support continuous learning and development of skills; create staffing plans for the appropriate coverage for safety programs, manage performance related matters.
