King County Road Services Division, Engineering Section has an excellent opportunity for you to be part of local government! We are looking for a dynamic Engineer III. This position is a senior level structural engineering position to lead staff and design complicated road and bridge structures. This is an exciting opportunity to work with the Road Services team and make a difference in our community!

Job Duties

To be considered for this opportunity, you must at a minimum demonstrate knowledge, skill and ability to:
  • Perform structural designs and prepare plan details, estimates, and specifications for bridges, walls, culverts and other roadway related structures.
  • Perform structural analyses and studies and prepare written reports or technical memos with the findings and recommendations.
  • Function as a technical expert to guide staff, provide advice to supervisor and
    managers
    , guide or direct design consultants and in-house engineers.
  • Function as a Project Manager or Lead Engineer on tasks or project assignments from inception through construction.
  • Provide quality control and quality assurance of designs, plans, specifications and cost estimates, and other engineering documents.
  • Perform bridge live load rating analysis and load upgrade design.
  • Review and issue overload truck and right-of-way use permits.
  • Assist in resolving structural-related construction issues.
  • Review and approve construction shop drawings, shoring plans, and supporting calculations.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE) and a minimum of four years of experience in structural design or bridge engineering.
  • Minimum of four years experience in developing bridge designs and preparation of structural design plans, specifications and cost estimates
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience, efficiency using structural design software (CSiBridge, STAAD Pro, PG Super, PG Splice, BRASS, etc.).
  • In-depth knowledge of the most up to date AASHTO LRFD Design Methodology, IBC, WSDOT Bridge Design Manual, ACI 318, PCI Design Manual, AISC Design Manual, AWS Welding Code, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience applying seismic design and analysis, including computer modeling, dynamic analysis for seismic loads, mitigation of vibrations for bridge structures, push-over analyses, etc.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of pre-stressed and post-tensioned concrete design and construction methods and applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and design innovative solutions involving new and replacement bridge structures to increase efficiency in both material costs and time required for construction.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare written technical reports or memos based on the findings from project conceptual studies, structural analyses and condition inspections, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, in a team environment and lead staff.
  • Can collaborate and/or provide input on project issues with others.
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service and the ability to deal with others in a straightforward and honest manner while being accountable for actions, maintaining confidentiality, good work ethic, and supporting organizational values.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact, write and communicate effectively on technical, policy and political issues in a clear and effective manner with various levels of management, staff, consultants, citizens (diverse individuals and groups).
  • Can perform bridge emergency condition inspections (damages, flooding or post-EQ) on bridges and structures and be able to determine and recommend actions if it impacts public safety
Necessary Requirements:
  • Valid Washington Driver's License or the ability to obtain a Washington State license within 30 days of hire
Desirable Requirements:
  • Valid Washington Professional Engineer (PE) License or the ability to transfer license to Washington State within 90 days of hire
Supplemental Information
  • This position is represented by Protec 17.
  • This recruitment may be used to fill additional vacancies for up to 6 months.
  • The typical work schedule is Monday - Friday 8-hour days. However, a possible flexible schedule can be considered after probation.
  • This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible.
  • Working after-hours, weekends, and holidays may be required in emergency circumstances, such as during inclement weather, and on special projects. Overtime hours, weekends, and holidays vary upon business demand, season and weather.
Teleworking Requirement
The work associated with this position will be performed by teleworking, field work, onsite work and meetings as needed. The responsibilities of this position may include regular and ongoing in-office work involving in person customer service in accordance with the division's available customer service options.

Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required, including the wearing of masks in some situations .
