Supervising Civil Engineer (Transit Engineer V)
- Summary
The Engineering Unit in Metro’s Capital Division has an immediate Special Duty Assignment opportunity available for a Supervising Civil Engineer V. This SDA position supervises the Civil Engineering Group in the Transit Engineering Unit.

The assignment is expected to last 12 months and may be extended. This recruitment may also establish an eligibility pool for future SDA openings that may occur in this classification within 6 months of created of the eligibility pool. The pool may be used at the discretion of the hiring authority.- Job Duties

As the Supervising Civil Engineer V your work may include the following:
- Supervise the Civil Engineering group including engineers and designers.
- Review engineering and design documents produced by consultants and/or in-house staff and implement quality control program over these documents.
- Manage day-to-day operations of Civil Engineering group including: assigning projects to staff, coordinating multi-disciplinary efforts in delivering engineering solutions to meet scope, schedule and budget of these products; address staff personnel issues and resolve conflicts; make presentations to senior leadership within the division; make project recommendations and decisions to the authority delegated; conduct annual performance review of staff.
- Lead and work on hands-on project work.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
We are looking for candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in engineering or architecture.
- Ten (10) years of experience as a Civil Engineer including five (5) years of experience in a position with leadership responsibilities.
- Registration as a professional engineer in the State of Washington or the ability to obtain a license within 90 days from date of hire.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver engineering solutions on complex civil engineering projects.
- Demonstrated organizational skills for managing and prioritizing a diverse workload with multiple customers.
- Demonstrated ability to constructively operate-in and lead a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and successfully with a diverse group of individuals from a variety of different positions and backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and operate both independently and as a team member.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience applying a high degree of professionalism in an environment that may include ambiguity and political sensitivity.
- Administrative or leadership experience in a closely related field with demonstrated experience in solving complex leadership issues within a multi-disciplinary technical work environment.
- A working knowledge of project management techniques and principles.

Selection Process
The letter of interest, resume, and supplemental questionnaire will be screened for qualifications, clarity and completeness. A selection process will be used to determine the most qualified candidates. This process may include: a review of your letter of interest, resume and answers to the supplemental questionnaire and/or a panel interview.
Final offers will be contingent on a record review (personnel file review). References may also be conducted. Management will make the final selection of candidates to be placed into the special duty assignments. The SDA will also be dependent on approval by your current supervisor. Pay for SDA will be in accordance with Personnel Guidelines or selected employee's collective bargaining agreement.
Temporary Telecommuting Requirement
The work associated with this position will be performed remotely, at least through July 5, 2021 in compliance with King County’s telecommuting mandate. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. There will be situations where the employee is required to report to a County worksite. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.

Work Schedule
The standard work week is normally within the 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday timeframe; however, alternative work schedules will be considered. Occasional work may be required during evenings and weekends. The Supervising Engineer is in the Transit Engineer V classification and is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and is not eligible for overtime pay.
