Summary
The Resource Recovery Section of the Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) seeks a self-motivated and detail-oriented Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Diversion Specialist to join its Sustainability Program. The Sustainability Program guides WTD's efforts to integrate sustainability practices into all facets of its operations, from embedding equity and social justice into the Division's capital program to piloting green building certifications to educating staff about reducing waste on WTD projects and at home.
This position will help WTD meet King County Strategic Climate Action Plan commitments around reducing and eliminating waste of resources. It will play a critical role in growing the C&D Waste Diversion Program, overseeing recycling and waste management, enhancing salvage opportunities, and providing guidance, education, and enforcement. This role will help project teams prevent waste and practice recycling, thereby reducing WTD supply and disposal costs and lowering the Division's greenhouse gas emissions to help combat climate change."
Resource Recovery is a business unit in WTD with programs that manage the delivery of products such as recycled water, Loop biosolids, and biogas, and we provide sewer heat recovery, research, and technology assessment services that contribute to ensuring clean water and maintaining public health while contributing to preserving our natural environment. Resource Recovery also provides leadership around communication, education, and policy.

Working Conditions
The work associated with this position will be performed predominantly by telecommuting, with occasional onsite work and meetings, as influenced by business needs. Employee will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer. King County is doing its part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and remains committed to reducing our carbon footprint.
To support employees during this time King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will be joining an innovative and progressive team.
Work Location: Primarily teleworking and the King Street Center 201 S. Jackson St., Seattle WA 98104. There will be an expectation to travel to various worksites throughout King and South Snohomish County as needed for your work.
Work Schedule: T his position is exempt from the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is not overtime eligible. This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. Monday through Friday.

Job Duties
- Lead Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste diversion efforts to ensure the Division meets C&D waste diversion requirements in King County's Strategic Climate Action Plan and Green Building Ordinance.
- Provide guidance, education, and training on C&D recycling and non-hazardous waste handling regulations to capital project teams, staff, and contractors.
- Provide sustainability support to WTD's capital program by participating on capital project teams as a waste diversion subject matter expert, developing approaches to reduce waste, selecting sustainable materials, and salvaging when possible.
- Implement technical requirements during design and ensure compliance during construction of C&D materials management regulations.
- Develop, build, and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and leaders in the C&D and green building community, including King County's Green Building Team.
- Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, construction management, or another related course of study or a combination of work experience and education in one of these fields which provides the skills and knowledge required for the job.
- Knowledge of construction and demolition materials management.
- Basic understanding of project management and/or construction management.
- Ability to successfully manage multiple work assignments with competing priorities
- Demonstrated ability to research and develop program policies, procedures, correspondence, and technical reports.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate highly technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Understanding of industrial materials and opportunities for reuse and recycling.
- Experience drafting and reviewing technical specifications.
- Experience providing training, education, and or technical support to diverse audiences.
- Familiarity with wastewater conveyance and treatment systems and operations.
- Envision™ Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) and/or LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP)
