Summary
King County Superior Court is accepting applications for a Term Limited Temporary Interpreter (Spanish) in Court Operations, Office of Interpreter Services.

This position is funded through December 31, 2023.
The responsibilities of this classification include interpreting accurately from English and to English for judges, commissioners, prosecutors, public defenders, private attorneys, defendants, litigants, witnesses, psychologists and other mental health professionals, social workers, and probation officers in the simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation modes in person at the King County Courthouse, Regional Justice Center, Juvenile Court, and related detention centers. Interprets for a variety of actions that include but are not limited to: during pretrial conferences, sworn statements, interviews, bond hearings, arraignments, plea bargains, motions, jury and bench trials, sentencing, probation hearings, domestic violence proceedings, court calendars, polygraph examinations, landlord/tenant disputes, and other hearings and ancillary appointments. Translates official documents submitted into evidence or for use by the judge or commissioner as well as correspondence to and from the court.

Work Schedule and Terms: This is a full-time benefit-eligible position working 35 hours per week (Term Limited Temporary (TLT)). The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. This position is FLSA nonexempt (hourly) and overtime-eligible.

Work Location: This position is based at the King County Courthouse in Seattle, but will be required to work at other Superior Court locations as well.
Job Duties
The following duties are not intended to represent the entire functional capacity of the position at the task level.
Provides complex simultaneous and consecutive interpretation and sight translation for judges, commissioners, defendants, witnesses, litigants, and others in criminal and civil courts, judges' chambers, attorneys' offices, in jail or detention centers, or by telephone. Analyze and resolve complex linguistic problems; maintain message content, context, and style.
Analyze, and apply problem-solving skills to, ethics and protocol issues.
Provide written translations of letters and official documents submitted into evidence among judges, commissioners, attorneys, litigants, and others. Review, edit, and proofread written translations including technical legal terminology to ensure accuracy and consistency throughout translation revisions. Compile terminology and information to be used in interpreting and translating, including technical legal terms.
Attend meetings related to court interpreting as needed.
Perform other duties of a similar nature and level.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in study and experience. Three years of Spanish-language interpreting experience in a court setting. Experience in maintaining professional communication with educated and non-educated individuals while remaining impartial. Experience in writing a translation of legal documents. Certified with Washington State AOC, or an equivalent agency is strongly preferred.
Supplemental Information
Necessary special requirements: The ability to reliably travel throughout the county is required. Finalists are subject to the Washington State Patrol criminal background check and a reference check. Criminal background records are not automatically disqualifying.
