Transit Building Operating Engineer - Apprentice
- Summary
We are seeking one highly motivated, enthusiastic, and hands-on Building Operating Engineer - Apprentice (BOE).
The BOE apprentice will be required to perform/learn day-to-day activities in the operation, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of transit facility heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, energy management and related building systems and equipment.
Experience is not required for this position. The most competitive applicant will have:

Selection into the Apprentice Program:
All current King County ATU Local 587 represented employees are eligible to apply for and participate in the Apprentice Program. Eligible applicants from the Transit Facilities Division will be considered first in the application review process. However, if there are insufficient qualified applicants from the Transit Facilities Division, all other qualified applicants will be considered.
Other requirements include being 18 years or older, must be a high school graduate or have an equivalency, and have a State of Washington driver's license and not currently serving a probationary period.
Vacancy Information
This recruitment will be used to fill one apprentice Career Service (CS) position. An applicant pool may also be created for vacancies that may arise over the next year in this classification.

- Job Duties
About the Apprenticeship
- Four-year on-the-job training and education program using a planned, closely supervised combination of classroom and real-world educational curriculum
- Work approximately 40 hours per week and attend classes 9 months per year
- Classes will be held at the Construction Industry Training Council of Washington (CITC)
- Work both indoors and outdoors, in closed spaces and high places
- Work and learn all shifts; including day and swing shifts
- Progressive pay steps as apprentice learns more demanding skills
- Successful completion will result in a journey-level BOE position

Experience, Skills, and Knowledge you will learn by the end of the Apprenticeship:
- Journey-level knowledge of and skill in the principles, practices, techniques, tools and equipment of the building operating engineer trade
- Knowledge of the performance characteristics, maintenance requirements and repair techniques for the full range of HVAC components, auxiliary equipment and automated control systems
- Knowledge of and skill in refrigerant management, soft soldering, brazing, electrical schematic diagnostics, equipment installation, electrical troubleshooting and calibration as well as troubleshooting hydroid, pneumatic and electronic systems
- Knowledge of and skill in automated building and digital control systems Knowledge of standard construction practices, principles and building systems Knowledge of related building and health codes and regulations
- Knowledge of safe moving and lifting practices, occupational hazards and safety requirements

Physical Requirements
This position is required to frequently lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift objects up to 100 pounds with assistance. Frequent walking, reaching, climbing, kneeling, stooping, and safe operation of power tools are also required. Work is often performed in cramped and awkward positions and in high places.
Work Environment:
Work may be performed in inclement weather, confined spaces and at heights such as on power lines and in manholes. Must be able to work in hot areas such as tunnels and vaults. When warranted, must be able and willing to wear safety equipment and protective clothing as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Selection Process: There are four (4) parts to the process.
Part I: Applications will be screened by the Talent Advisor to ensure that they meet minimum qualifications. Hiring preference will be given to the King County Metro Facilities Employees and will be considered first.
Part II: Applicants that make it past step 1 will be invited to test. The exams are designed to evaluate the candidate's mechanical aptitude. These will be closed book exams. The highest scorers on the aptitude test will move forward to the interview process.
Part III: The most competitive candidates from Part II may be invited to participate in a panel interview. A skills test may be included in the interview process.
Part IV: Transit management will make the final selection of candidate(s) to be hired. Once an offer of employment has been made, beginning work will be contingent on passing necessary requirements outlined for safety sensitive positions, which may include some or all of the following: acceptable driving record, a pre-employment drug screen and physical, and review of each candidates work record for the past 12 months.
