About the Transit Electronic Technician
This position is responsible for maintaining electronic equipment onboard transit coaches, diagnosing and repairing trolley system propulsion components, and rebuilding electronic components used in transit coaches.

Safety Sensitive Position
This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment, and subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.- Job Duties

In this role you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work. As the Transit Electronic Technician, you will:
- Use computer and test programs to troubleshoot, diagnose and Repair Propulsion and Onboarding systems;
- Perform routine preventive maintenance inspections on electronic equipment, making adjustments and alignments to optimize transit coach performance;
- Troubleshoot and repair malfunctions on coach ancillary electronic systems and similar systems in other transit equipment with little to no supervision;
- Service and maintain analog and digital control systems; troubleshoot solid-state electronic systems;
- Diagnose propulsion system malfunctions on trolley and hybrid coaches; remove and replace defective electrical and electronic components and wiring- this may require work in the vicinity of high voltage;
- Setup and operate various types of common electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, signal generators, function generators, chart recorders, insulation testers, data loggers, computers, and other specialized test equipment;
- Assist other staff with electrical troubleshooting;
- Maintain records of completed calibrations, preventive maintenance, repairs, time worked and materials used; enter and extract data using an automated maintenance management system;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
At a minimum, to qualify for this position you will need:
- Two years of college-level or military electronics training
- Two years of experience troubleshooting and repairing electronic equipment
- An equivalent combination of education and experience
In addition, successful candidates will also have:
- Experience and skill interpreting schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints and technical manuals;
- Ability to use a variety of specialized electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, and computer diagnostic equipment;
- Ability to use large hand tools such as: pneumatic tools and large electronic terminal crimpers;
- Experience working around high voltage in accordance with applicable safety legislation and guidelines to effectively measure high voltages (700 volts) with hand-held test equipment;
- Knowledge and use of current industrial safety rules, shop safety rules, and applicable regulations and procedures that apply to a vehicle repair facility;
- Basic computer skills required to enter and extract information from an automated maintenance management system and related software;
- Skill in basic mathematics;
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others and work effectively as part of a team, as well as, work independently;
- Ability to recognize problems to recommend and improve processes/procedures;
- Experience soldering and de-soldering electronic components;
- Ability to make decisions regarding rules, regulations, safety and requisite policies and able to apply the principles of cost-benefit analysis in daily work or projects;
- Excellent organizational skills.
Desirable qualifications:
- Experience repairing and maintaining closed-circuit television (CCTV.)

This position is open to the general public and all King County employees.
Application and Selection ProcessAn online employment application and completion of the supplemental questionnaire is required. Your completed application must show all jobs in the last 10 years if you have 10 years of employment.
Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be screened based upon the clarity and completeness of their application information. No application attachments will be referred to during the application review process.
Applicants notified that they have been selected to continue in the hiring process will be invited to participate in a written test. Those who pass the test will be invited to a panel interview. The most competitive candidates passing the interview will be offered a conditional offer of employment.
All conditional offers are contingent upon completion of:
- Passing the three (3) written Commercial Driver Permit tests titled General Knowledge, Air Brake and Passenger (if you do not already have a Commercial Driver License with these endorsements);
- Demonstrating acceptable driving history by obtaining and submitting your current Washington State Abstract of Driving Record – FULL (This is a date sensitive document and cannot be accepted early- please do not submit until/ unless requested);
- Successfully completing Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug and Alcohol paperwork and passing a two-year DOT drug and alcohol background check;
- Successfully passing reference checks;
- Satisfactorily completing the DOT physical exam against the Transit Electronic Technician Job Analysis to receive an acceptable DOT medical card and/ or waiver that is approved by King County Metro Transit.
There will be an in-person written test. Testing dates are currently scheduled for
February 15 through 18, 2021. If selected, you will be scheduled for testing on one of these dates between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Testing typically takes up to one hour. You must take the test onsite in King County, WA. Interviews will be offered to candidates with satisfactory test scores.
Interview Information:
Interviews are scheduled to take place between the dates of February 22 through 25, 2021. All interviews will be conducted in person.
Vacancy Information
This recruitment will be used to fill 6 fully-benefited term-limited temporary (TLT) positions. This posting may be used to establish an eligibility pool to fill future Career Service (regular) or TLT vacancies that may occur over the next twelve months.
Work Schedule
Employees in this classification work a 40 hour per week schedule with two consecutive days off, but not necessarily Saturday and Sunday. These positions are FLSA non-exempt and therefore eligible for overtime pay if scheduled. Work schedules and locations are based on a seniority system. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift, including any combination of days off, at any location.
