A Day in the Life
Ask any employee in vehicle maintenance and they will tell you there is no such thing as a "normal day." The reality is that variety in vehicle maintenance keeps things interesting and challenging. King County is seeking an equipment service worker who thrives on the extraordinary to perform basic automotive and heavy-duty equipment servicing and maintenance. This includes daily coach fueling and servicing, assisting mechanics as requested and performing a variety of shop duties typical of an equipment repair shop environment, and maintaining shop and service records. You may service gasoline powered automotive equipment, hybrid and diesel-powered coaches, electric powered trolleys, and other motorized and auxiliary equipment.
Around the Clock Operation
Vehicle Maintenance section operates three shifts (day, swing, and graveyard) seven days a week at various location throughout King County. Openings may occur on any shift. Swing and graveyard shift employees receive a shift differential. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift, including any combination of days off, at any location. Graveyard and/or swing shift vacancies will be the most likely openings.
Safety Sensitive Position
This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment, and subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.

What You'll Get to Do in This Position
At a minimum to qualify for this position you will need:
One year of automotive equipment servicing experience OR graduation from an accredited pre-apprenticeship program for the trades is required.
Additional minimum requirements Include:
The job requires a range of physical skills normally associated with automotive service and maintenance activities including standing, bending, crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching, twisting, and the operation of foot controls while driving. Continuous hand and finger manipulations are required. Probing, dumping and inserting fare boxes into their receive bins involves pushing and pulling, bending and crouching, and ability to lift up to 50 pounds (this includes full fare box cash boxes as well as automotive parts.)

Selection Process

Work Schedule
This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay. Employees work a 40-hour week schedule with two consecutive days off, but not necessarily Saturday and Sunday.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a vehicle maintenance garage with exposure to grease, dirt, carbon monoxide and diesel fumes. Employees must be willing and able to wear protective clothing as required while on duty, and to observe all required safety standards and precautions. Some duties are also performed outdoors, involving exposure to all kinds of weather, e.g. parking vehicles, attaching and removing snow chains. Employees must be willing and able to learn to drive and operate all kinds of equipment, as well as to perform duties other than vehicle servicing, (such as driving vehicles, filling out reports, and removing trolley poles from wires, etc.)
This is a safety sensitive position. Equipment Service Workers are subject to random drug and alcohol testing. In addition, the correct and valid Washington State Commercial Driver license and the correspondingly required medical certification must always be maintained.

What You'll Get to Do in This Position
- Fuel and clean transit buses to be placed in service daily, check tires and fluid levels, report defects.
- Inspect automotive equipment for servicing needs. Service equipment with fuel, oil, water and air. Perform other related accessory maintenance tasks.
- Observe and report mechanical and other defects. Assist mechanics as needed. Lubricate all types of automotive equipment including automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.
- Change oil and filters. Change tires as needed.
- Clean and wash equipment. Attach and remove snow chains. Park and deliver motor vehicles. Do minor repairs (tighten mirrors, swipe arms).
- Assist in cleaning shop and working areas. Clean and care for tools. Assist in minor storekeeping duties and steam cleaning.
- Keep routine records of tank gauge readings, amount of supplies used, vehicle numbers and routine servicing activities. Prepare required reports.
- Use maintenance charts and manuals as needed.
- Direct all types of vehicles to parking stalls. Park vehicles.
- Operate high pressure steam cleaning equipment. Clean and maintain chemical balance in hot tanks and deliver cleaned parts to proper locations.
- May be required to pick up or deliver parts as needed between bases. Input or extract data using a computer terminal as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- Proficiency in the use of personal computers and software programs to enter and extract information from automated vehicle maintenance systems and related software applications.

Necessary Special Requirements:
- All applicants must be 21 years old at time of application.
- Must pass drug and alcohol testing provision for safety-sensitive positions as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation, 49 CFR Parts 40 and 655.
- A valid Washington State Driver License and acceptable driving record.
- Within 90 days of hire, a candidate must be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement, and with the air brake restriction removed. All candidates without a current CDL must have a Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), with correct endorsement and restriction removed, prior to receiving a formal offer. After hire, King County Metro Transit will provide you with paid training, on our equipment, so that you can obtain a Class B CDL, which is required for this position.
