A Day in the Life
Ask any employee in Vehicle Maintenance and they will tell you there is no such thing as a "normal day." The reality is that variety in Vehicle Maintenance keeps things interesting and challenging. King County is seeking an equipment service worker who thrives on the extraordinary to perform basic automotive and heavy-duty equipment servicing and maintenance. This includes daily coach fueling and servicing, assisting mechanics as requested and performing a variety of shop duties typical of an equipment repair shop environment, and maintaining shop and service records. You may service gasoline powered automotive equipment, hybrid and diesel-powered coaches, electric powered trolleys, and other motorized and auxiliary equipment. We're looking for people who have a minimum of one year of professional or personal experience performing these tasks.

Around the Clock Operation
Vehicle Maintenance section operates three shifts (day, swing, and graveyard) seven days a week at various location throughout King County. Openings may occur on any shift. Swing and graveyard shift employees receive a shift differential. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift , including any combination of days off, at any location. Graveyard and/or swing shift vacancies will be the most likely openings.

Safety Sensitive Position

This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment, and subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.

Job Duties

What You'll Get to Do in This Position
  • Fuel and clean (vacuum at specific locations) transit buses to be placed in service daily, check tires and fluid levels, report defects. Lubricate all types of automotive equipment including automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.
  • Inspect automotive equipment for servicing needs. Service equipment with fuel, oil, water and air. Perform other related accessory maintenance tasks.
  • Observe and report mechanical and other defects. Assist mechanics as needed.
  • Complete minor repairs (tighten mirrors, swipe arms.)
  • Change oil and filters.
  • Change tires as needed.
  • Clean and wash equipment.
  • Attach and remove snow chains.
  • Park and deliver motor vehicles.
  • Assist in cleaning shop and working areas. Clean and care for tools. Assist in minor storekeeping duties and steam cleaning.
  • Keep routine records of tank gauge readings, amount of supplies used, vehicle numbers and routine servicing activities. Prepare required reports.
  • Use maintenance charts and manuals as needed.
  • Direct all types of vehicles to parking stalls. Park vehicles.
  • Operate high pressure steam cleaning equipment. Clean and maintain chemical balance in hot tanks and deliver cleaned parts to proper locations.
  • May be required to pick up or deliver parts as needed between bases.
  • Input or extract data using a computer terminal as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills



At a minimum to qualify for this position you will need:
One year of professional or *personal automotive equipment servicing experience OR graduation from an accredited pre-apprenticeship program for the trades is required. Experience could have been gained through professional or personal experience.

Additional minimum requirements Include:

  • Proficiency in the use of personal computers and software programs to enter and extract information from automated vehicle maintenance systems and related software applications.
Physical Requirements:
The job requires a range of physical skills normally associated with automotive service and maintenance activities including standing, bending, crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching, twisting, and the operation of foot controls while driving. Continuous hand and finger manipulations are required. Probing, dumping and inserting fare boxes into their receive bins involves pushing and pulling, bending and crouching, and ability to lift up to 50 pounds (this includes full fare box cash boxes as well as automotive parts.)

Necessary Special Requirements:
  • All applicants must be 18 years old at time of application.
  • Must pass drug and alcohol testing provision for safety-sensitive positions as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation, 49 CFR Parts 40 and 655.
  • Must pass post-offer, pre-employment physical.
  • A valid Washington State Driver License and acceptable driving record.
  • Within 90 days of hire, a candidate must be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement, and with the air brake restriction removed. All candidates without a current CDL must have a Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), with correct endorsement and restriction removed, prior to receiving a formal offer. After hire, King County Metro Transit will provide you with paid training, on our equipment, so that you can obtain a Class B CDL, which is required for this position.

This position is open to the general public and current King County employees that have passed their initial King County probation period.

Vacancy Information
This recruitment will be used to fill the immediate need for multiple term-limited temporary (TLT) and special duty (SDA) vacancies. These positions will be full time and have full benefits.

Applications received may also be used to create an eligibility list for future SDA/TLT vacancies in the same classification that might occur over the following 12 months, at the discretion of the hiring authority. SDA/TLT employees will be converted to career service in the order that they are hired, once a career service position has been approved.

Work Schedule
Employees in this non-exempt classification work a 40 hour per week schedule with two consecutive days off, but not necessarily Saturday and Sunday. Work schedules and locations are based on a seniority system and schedules are bid on twice a year.

Employees must be able and willing to work any shift, including any combination of days off, at any location. Third (graveyard) or second (swing) shift vacancies will be the most likely openings . Swing and graveyard shift employees receive a shift pay differential (Shift pay is 5% for second shift and 7.5% for third shift, on top of base hourly pay). These positions are FLSA non-exempt and therefore eligible for overtime pay.
Work Location
This position may work at any of Metro's transit bases around King County, including bases in Downtown Seattle, Shoreline, Bellevue, and Tukwila.
