Summary

Transit Facility Utility Laborers perform a wide variety of laboring tasks and semi-skilled work throughout King County. Primary areas of work are bus route shelter cleaning, landscape/grounds maintenance, bus tunnel maintenance/cleaning and semi-skilled assistance to skilled trades. Utility Laborers may report to our North Facilities location in north Seattle, our South Facilities location in Tukwila and/or our Downtown Transit Tunnel.
 
Who May Apply  
This career service position is open to the general public.  Current qualified King County Transit Local 587 internal applicants will be given first consideration. This recruitment will be used to fill Three current vacancies and may be used to establish an eligibility list to fill future career service/and or temporary vacancies that may occur over the next twelve months.

Work Schedule
This position is overtime eligible and employees must be available and willing to work any of three shifts (day, swing and graveyard). Swing and graveyard shifts receive premium pay. Positions are generally staffed seven days a week including holidays, except the landscape/grounds maintenance shifts, which currently work Monday through Friday.  Shift placement is determined by union seniority and subject to semi-annual change.  These positions are subject to 24-hour call-out response to emergencies, including operation of trucks with snow plows and sanders in adverse weather conditions.

JOB DUTIES:
 

Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work.

  • Pressure wash passenger shelters located on bus routes; clean, empty trash and remove debris around shelter; pressure wash, clean and maintain park-and-ride lots, transit centers, parking garages, maintenance bases and similar areas.
  • Provide immediate response to and clean up unsanitary conditions that may involve bodily fluids using personal protective equipment as required.
  • Sand streets and remove snow and ice from transit facilities; patch pavement and assist in paving repairs.
  • Pick up, handle and haul a variety of heavy materials, trash and similar items.
  • Operate a variety of light and heavy duty equipment vehicles and equipment including pick-ups, vans, dump trucks, loaders, personnel lifts, forklifts, snow plows, mowers, tractors, pressure washers, steam cleaners and related types of equipment.
  • Assist in grounds maintenance; pick up and haul lawn refuse; mow lawn and remove weeds; dig holes for plantings; perform earth removal and shaping for flowers beds and ornamental landscapes; spread landscaping bark; trim trees, shrubs and bushes.
  • Assist trades personnel in paint preparation and painting; assist carpenters and metal constructors in various wood and metal work projects; clean areas containing oil, grease and similar products.
  • Move furniture and equipment; haul refuse.
  • Perform varied semi-skilled carpentry, painting, facility maintenance and minor repair duties.
  • Maintain and clean assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:
 
  • A valid Driver's License with CDL, Class B or above, with no air-brake restriction, and a good driving record
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in facility maintenance, such as landscaping, facility cleaning, and trades support
  • Skills and experience in grounds maintenance practices, laboring tasks and basic trades' tasks
  • Knowledge of safe moving and lifting practices, occupational hazards and safety requirements
  • Skill in the care and operation of automotive and facility maintenance tools and equipment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English as well as follow written and oral instructions
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures

Desirable Qualifications
 
  •  Two years of current or recent experience performing heavy physical labor such as but not limited to; lifting and carrying garbage, poles, lumber, filters, signs, equipment and tools, shoveling dirt and sand, loading wheelbarrows and raking bark
  • Experience working in the road "right-of-way," near moving vehicles, and/or equipment
  • Experience in the care and use of industrial pressure washers, steam cleaners, mowers, tractors and other related equipment
  • Experience assisting gardeners in maintaining grounds and lawn areas
  • Experience performing or assisting with basic levels of painting and carpentry
  • Flagging certification
  • Forklift operation certification

Necessary Special Requirements
As noted above, a valid Driver's License with CDL, Class B or above with no air-brake restriction, is required at the time of application.  An acceptable driving record is also required and will be checked. Out-of-state candidates must obtain their Washington Driver's License with CDL by date of hire. 

Physical Requirements
This position requires physical skill to perform duties involving heavy physical labor to include bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling, twisting, turning, and lifting up to 50 pounds, associated with loading/hauling refuse and garbage, grounds/lawn maintenance and mowing, shoveling snow, paving or concrete repairs, moving furniture and equipment, and pressure washing/steam cleaning. 
 
Work Environment
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions often in a dirty, dusty, wet and noisy environment where the use of a respirator and hearing protection maybe needed.  May work alone or as part of a crew.

Selection Process
Applications will be screened to determine whether candidates meet minimum qualifications. Candidates without a current CDL will be screened out.
