Transportation Planner I Special Duty Assignment (SDA)

This Special Duty Opportunity is being offered to Metro Transit career service employees who have passed their initial probationary period. We are not currently accepting applications from King County employees outside Metro Transit or the public.
King County Metro Transit is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Service Planning team within Metro’s Service Development Section. Service Planning designs, develops, and recommends transit service changes to improve performance and meet customer needs. Service Planning is committed to developing services in a way that advances equity, inclusion, and social justice including through collaborative work with stakeholders and the public. We coordinate closely and engage directly with transit riders and the general public, other Metro groups, and partners including Sound Transit, Seattle Department of Transportation and local jurisdictions in King County.
The Transportation Planner I will play an important role supporting analysis of transit services and assisting in the planning and service change process for Metro’s recovery from Covid and service restructuring changes in 2021 and 2022.
This recruitment will be used to fill one Special Duty Assignment anticipated to last a minimum of one year with potential to be extended up to two years. More than one candidate may be rotated into the assignment at the hiring manager's discretion.
Work Location:
This position will be located in the King Street Center Building - 201 S Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104, but is currently eligible for telecommuting during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Duration of telecommuting period is dependent upon guidance from County leadership; the current timeframe is through at least July 5, 2021.
Temporary Telecommuting Requirement
The work associated with this position will be performed remotely, at least through July 5, 2021 in compliance with King County’s telecommuting mandate. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. There will be situations where the employee is required to report to a County worksite. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.

The individual selected for this opportunity will be joining an innovative and progressive team. Work Schedule
Standard work hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. This position is designated non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act, which means it is eligible for overtime pay with prior supervisor approval. Salary placement will be contingent on collective bargaining agreement and King County Personnel Guidelines governing special duty assignment.

Selection Process

Gather, maintain, analyze and present data covering topics such as transit ridership and performance data, demographic data, survey results, and more.
Provide project support including data summary and analysis, presentation preparation, and logistics for projects such as Covid recovery and service restructuring projects.
Support the service change process including communicating Metro service change information to other Metro groups; scheduling/facilitating/taking notes at meetings; responding to customer inquiries and concerns about upcoming changes; and reviewing and tracking service changes.
Develop and support the Service Planning organization including: supporting and updating the group SharePoint site; visual management system, and other tools for sharing service project information.
Perform other duties as assigned.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Ability to collect and analyze data from a variety of sources
Ability to learn transportation planning and analysis techniques and principles
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and successfully with a diverse group of individuals from a variety of different positions and backgrounds
Experience with delivering transit service or other experience demonstrating an ability to see issues from the perspective of a transit customer
Ability to work independently and manage numerous projects simultaneously
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Desirable Qualifications
Experience with analytical methods and with software tools or programming languages such as Power BI, R, Remix, HASTUS NetPlan, or other similar products
Familiarity with local transit and mobility systems and products, key partners and stakeholders
