These employees perform skilled work by safely operating power and hand tools like slope grade control lasers, power drill, power driver, chain saw, weed eater, and walk-behind-mower to perform vegetation control and minor maintenance on equipment and facilities. This is not an entry-level position.

There are four positions for Special Duty or Term-limited Temporary. The Term-limited Temporary are expected to end in twelve (12) months with the possibility of extension. These positions are available to King County career service employees as a special duty assignment. Experience in this temporary position has the potential to increase knowledge and skills that could be widely applicable to future opportunities within King County government and beyond.
What to Expect as a Successful Employee
Work Schedule: This position works a 40-hour work week. This position is overtime eligible. This position may work a 4/10 schedule or 5/8 and may be required to work on holidays.
Who May Apply: This position is open to all qualified applicants. This recruitment will be used to fill vacant positions and may be used to create a list of competitive candidates to fill similar vacancies that may occur.

- In 3 months, will have demonstrated knowledge of and relevant work experience safely operating power and hand tools to perform vegetation control.
- In 6 months, will have knowledge of the use and care of tools and equipment.
- In 12 months, will have demonstrated knowledge of basic construction skills, including building craft and mechanical skills using slope grade control lasers.
- Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools (i.e. power drill, power driver, walk-behind-mower, trimmer/weed-eater, chainsaw, etc.) for long periods of time.
- Performing minor maintenance and repair of equipment, buildings, and other structures.
- Properly maintain vegetation, cut and remove brush.
- Noxious weed control; identifying, pulling and spraying.
- Performing assigned drainage structure repairs and minor construction, including pipes, catch basins and manholes as well as cleaning of ditches, gutters, catch basins, culverts, and drainage tiles.
- Shoveling gravel, asphalt and dirt; rake asphalt and tar pavement joints
- Installing construct and mending chain link fencing
- Dig post-holes and set posts
- Assist in High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) fusion on gas lines (i.e. butt fusion, electro fusion from 2" - 24 " diameter).
- Lifting, carrying, moving or handling up to 70-pound bags, tools equipment and other objects to complete any of the above functions.
- Reading various road maps and construction blueprints.
- Assisting in Vactor truck operation.
- Assisting with traffic control.
- Communicating courteously with the general public and fellow coworkers.
- A minimum of one (1) year of demonstrated knowledge in using, caring, and safely operating power and hand tools (i.e. slope grade control lasers, power drill, power driver, chain saw, weed eater, and walk-behind-mower) to perform vegetation control and minor maintenance on equipment and facilities.
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience working in heavy manual labor areas; OR any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the work.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and policies for construction, or other heavy manual labor areas (i.e. fall protection, confined space, hazardous materials).
- Skill in reading blueprints and schematic drawings to perform landfill gas pipe installation.
- Knowledge of the use and care of tools and equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic construction skills, including building craft and mechanical skills using slope grade control lasers.
- The ability to perform physical labor including bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, and twisting.
- The ability and willingness to work inside/outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, inclement weather while on uneven slopes, surfaces, grades and terrain and other adverse conditions such as odor, noise, dust and traffic.
- Valid Washington State Driver's License upon hire and the ability to travel to other transfer stations during the course of the work day as work may be assigned at various sites throughout the county. Demonstrated knowledge of and relevant work experience safely operating power and hand tools to perform vegetation control.
