Wastewater Operator/Senior Operator (Brightwater Treatment Plant)

JOB SUMMARY:
The responsibilities of this classification include operating, monitoring and maintaining wastewater treatment and odor control equipment, systems and processes in wastewater (primary, secondary, MBR, solids handling) treatment facility and/or collection and conveyance system. Responsibilities may also include coordinating, training and providing technical expertise to other wastewater treatment operations staff and coordinating on-site responses to unusual occurrences and emergencies.
WORK SCHEDULE: The treatment plants are operated 24/7. Applicants must be available to work any and all assigned shift schedules. Candidates can be assigned to any shift per business needs. This position is overtime eligible. The Brightwater Operations Schedule currently comprises three consecutive 12-hour day shifts, followed by one 12-hour night, followed by 4 days off. Brightwater Operators typically work every area of the plant during their first two-day shifts, followed by a one-day shift in the Control Room; the night shift is a solo shift, monitoring and operating primarily from the Control Room.

- Operate, monitor and maintain wastewater and odor control equipment and facilities.
- Operate, monitor and maintain biological, chemical, mechanical and hydraulic processes at the wastewater treatment plant and associated facilities.
- Conduct sampling and analyses of wastewater and recommend changes to process to meet federal and Washington State permits and regulations and to optimize wastewater plant performance.
- Train others on site-specific areas or through on the job training.
- Perform maintenance on wastewater treatment plant equipment including cleaning, servicing operating equipment.
- Communicate with the public, construction personnel, consultants and engineers to resolve complaints, provide construction assistance, give tours and carry out related duties.
- Exchange information on wastewater operations, maintenance and processes with staff involved in process control, maintenance, facilities services, off-site facilities and other areas.
- Respond to unusual occurrences and assist in emergency responses.
- Operate, monitor and control wastewater equipment and systems using complex computer systems.
- Record technical data and daily activities in logs
- Be available to work all shift schedules

- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, including MBR, preliminary, primary, secondary, digestion, gas handling systems, sludge handling and plant-wide air, water, electrical and hydraulic support systems.
- Operating Using Distributed Control Systems
- Software: CMMS, MS Word, Excel, HachWIMS or other similar process control software, and Energy Control/LOTO tools
- Knowledge of collection systems, including pump stations, regulator stations and miscellaneous structures, and of disinfection methods
- Knowledge of mechanical and electrical theory, cross-connections and pumps
- Lockout Tagout
- Wastewater Treatment Safety
- Knowledge of wastewater terminology and process control
- Knowledge of industrial safety procedures and practices
- Knowledge of and skill in applying sampling, testing and laboratory procedures
- Communications skills
- Basic mathematics, algebra and computer application skills
- Skill in reading, recording and interpreting instrumentation and control gauges and meters
- Skill in operating basic hand and power tools and specialized equipment
- Skill in operating complex computer control systems and identifying normal and abnormal operating conditions
- Skill in the interpretation and application of technical information from plant drawings, operations and maintenance manuals and lab tests
- Skill in manually starting and stopping equipment, systems and processes
- Skill in establishing and maintaining work relationships with diverse occupational groups

LICENSING / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Washington State Group III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification or higher issued from the Washington State Department of Ecology
- Valid Washington State Driver's License
- CPR and first aid certification – can be achieved within the first six months of employment
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION- The position requires the ability to work all shift schedules and staff in this job class are required to report to work during adverse and inclement weather conditions. This position is required to be on standby on a rotating basis and subject to after-hours call in.
- This position will initially start on Day shift with extensive training on the Brightwater Treatment Plant, Influent Pump Station and offsite facilities. The operator in this position must demonstrate competency to operate all areas of the plant and the control room before moving to the rotating shift.
- Incumbents perform fieldwork at the Brightwater Treatment Plant and offsite facilities and are required to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, use stairways and ladders, enter permit-required confined spaces and work from elevated spaces. There is exposure to biological and chemical hazards and noxious odors.

SELECTION PROCESS: A competitive process will be used for this selection process. Review of internal candidates will include reviews of performance appraisals, personnel files, internal reference, Benefit Time / Vacation usage logs, etc., before any final offer.
