- The Environmental Health Services Division of Public Health Seattle and King County is seeking applicants from diverse backgrounds who are representative of our King County population, to apply for the position of Assistant Division Director for Community Toxics, Science, and Policy.This leadership position reports directly to the Director of the Environmental Health Services Division and works in tandem with the Deputy Director of Operations to assist the Environmental Health Services Division Director in establishing leadership within the Division. The Assistant Division Director is also responsible for overseeing the Community Toxics, Solid Waste, Rodents and Zoonotics, Local Hazardous Waste Management, Healthy Community Planning, and Indoor Air Quality programs.
The Assistant Division Director will act on behalf of the Director in the Director's absence and represent the Environmental Health Services Division in regional matters. This may include facilitation of regional discussions, attendance at regional meetings, and development of regional policy.
The ideal candidate will have:- Leadership experience in environmental health and public health;
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and cultural competency skills;
- Demonstrated creative and analytical skills to support the Division's work;

Work Schedule: This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and is not overtime eligible. The regular workweek is 40 hours, Monday through Friday. Occasional evenings, weekends, on-call work, and some travel are required.

- Job Duties
- Oversee Community Toxics, Solid Waste, Rodents and Zoonotics, Local Hazardous Waste Management, Healthy Community Planning, and Indoor Air Quality programs.
- Serve as a liaison for the division director and provide information, communicate decisions and represent the mission, goals and values of the Environmental Health Services Division with diverse internal and external groups.
- Provide oversight and management to the Solid Waste, Rodents and Zoonotics programs. Use current science, efficient inspector protocols, and state and local regulations to ensure that the various types of solid waste facilities, vehicles, landfills, and pet businesses are operated and maintained in a manner that demonstrates regional leadership and is current with "Best Industry Practices". Protects population health by mitigating exposures and helps to ensure the environment is ecologically maintained in conjunction with the regulated facilities and the Washington State Department of Ecology.
- Work with tools and methodologies, or developing new tools and approaches in response to the ever changing environment and fluctuating demands and priorities as they relate to human health risk assessment, epidemiology, toxicology, indoor air, the built environment, water quality, and ecological standards for air, soil and water, as well as man-made disasters of emergency response capacity.
- Address sustainability and the built environment through Environmental Health's Healthy Community Planning and Change Unit.
- Serve as the lead scientist and expert in determining the capacity and ability for King County Environmental Public Health to take a more proactive role in addressing toxins with communities.
- Provide excellent use of data resources, metrics, strong analytical capabilities, and have the capacity to respond rapidly and accurately to emerging issues.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
- Skilled in effective decision-making and team consensus building.
- Experience managing a variety of programs and projects simultaneously in and environmental regulatory setting.
- Ability to communicate diplomatically on politically sensitive issues.
- Skilled in working effectively with diverse employee and community populations.
- Knowledge of, and ability, to promote diversity, equity and social justice issues in an organization or community.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Washington State Driver's License or the ability to travel to work locations with limited or no public transportation services is required.
- Managerial experience including staff supervision, program management, performance management and team management.
- Experience with managing programs, ensuring deliverables, managing tasks, and communicating results.
- Ability to interpret toxicology data in the context of environmental and public health needs.
- Ability to perform complex health risk assessments for impacted communities from a public health perspective.
- Ability to create a climate in which people want to achieve their best; can motivate many kinds of direct report, team or project members; enables co-workers to grow and succeed through feedback, instruction, and encouragement.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The most competitive candidates will possess:- Masters' of Science degree in toxicology, or in a health science, and demonstrated experience in toxicology within a public health environment
- Five years of progressive management experience in a large governmental or private organization, with a well-developed broad range of management skills.
- Doctoral degree in toxicology and demonstrated public health experience.
- Demonstrated experience as a Principal Investigator for federal funds.
- Demonstrated ability in project management.
- Demonstrated experience in writing grants, policy development.
- Knowledge and understanding of public health principles.
- Established productive and collaborative working relationships with Program partner agencies,

- Public Health relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.
